Agriculture Farm Manager Roles & Responsibilities
1. Farm Planning & Operations
- Prepare daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal farm work plans.
- Plan crop cultivation according to land, water availability, climate and market demand.
- Allocate land for different crops and fodder.
- Ensure all agricultural activities are completed on schedule.
- Monitor overall farm productivity and operating costs.
- Maintain proper farm discipline and working procedures.
2. Land Preparation & Cultivation
- Supervise ploughing, levelling, bunding and land preparation.
- Plan sowing/planting schedules.
- Ensure correct seed/planting-material quantity and quality.
- Monitor germination and plant establishment.
- Supervise weeding, earthing-up, pruning and other cultivation activities.
- Maintain crop-wise cultivation records.
3. Irrigation & Water Management
- Prepare irrigation schedules for each crop.
- Monitor drip, sprinkler, borewell, pump and pipeline systems.
- Prevent water wastage and leakage.
- Maintain daily water/irrigation records.
- Coordinate repairs of irrigation equipment.
- Ensure adequate water availability during critical crop stages.
4. Fertilizer & Organic Manure Management
- Prepare fertilizer application schedules based on soil and crop requirements.
- Ensure correct dosage and application method.
- Maintain records of fertilizer and manure received and used.
- Manage farmyard manure, compost, vermicompost and other organic inputs.
- Coordinate with the soil/agriculture consultant for nutrient management.
- Prevent unnecessary or excessive input usage.
5. Pest & Disease Management
- Regularly inspect crops for pests, diseases and nutrient deficiencies.
- Maintain crop inspection records.
- Immediately report serious problems to management/agriculture consultant.
- Follow approved integrated pest-management practices.
- Ensure safe storage and handling of agricultural chemicals.
- Maintain pesticide/fungicide application records where applicable.
6. Labour Management
- Allocate daily duties to farm workers.
- Maintain worker attendance.
- Monitor productivity and work quality.
- Train workers in proper agricultural practices.
- Ensure workers follow safety procedures.
- Control unnecessary labour costs.
- Report absenteeism, misconduct or performance issues to management.
7. Machinery & Equipment
- Maintain tractors, power tillers, pumps, sprayers and other farm machinery.
- Prepare preventive-maintenance schedules.
- Maintain equipment usage and fuel records.
- Ensure machinery is used only for authorized farm activities.
- Report major repair requirements to management.
- Monitor diesel/fuel consumption.
8. Seeds & Agricultural Materials
- Prepare monthly/seasonal material requirements.
- Check quality and quantity of materials received.
- Maintain stock registers.
- Monitor minimum and maximum stock levels.
- Prevent wastage, unauthorized usage and expired stock.
- Coordinate purchases with management/procurement.
9. Harvest Management
- Plan harvesting according to crop maturity.
- Ensure proper harvesting methods.
- Organize labour and machinery for harvesting.
- Record harvested quantities crop-wise.
- Minimize harvesting and post-harvest losses.
- Coordinate transportation and storage.
10. Sales & Market Coordination
- Monitor market prices for major farm produce.
- Provide management with current market information.
- Coordinate weighing, grading, packing and dispatch.
- Maintain sales and dispatch records.
- Compare production cost with selling price.
- Report unsold/slow-moving produce.
11. Farm Records & Reporting The Farm Manager should maintain:
- Daily farm activity report
- Labour attendance

12. Cost Control
- Prepare crop-wise production budgets.
- Monitor labour, fertilizer, seed, irrigation, machinery and other costs.
- Identify unnecessary expenditure.
- Compare budget vs actual cost every month.
- Calculate cost per acre and cost per kg of production.
- Recommend ways to improve profitability.
13. Farm Security & Asset Protection
- Protect crops, machinery, tools and agricultural materials.
- Control unauthorized entry into the farm.
- Maintain gate/visitor records where required.
- Report theft, damage or loss immediately.
- Ensure proper storage of fuel, chemicals, tools and equipment.
14. Sustainability & Soil Management For your type of farm, the manager can also be responsible for:
- Soil-health improvement.
- Organic manure utilization.
- Crop-residue management.
- Compost production.
- Fodder cultivation for dairy animals.
- Water conservation.
- Intercropping and crop rotation.
- Reducing unnecessary chemical usage.
- Integrating agriculture with dairy manure management.
15. Coordination With Dairy Farm Since you have an integrated agriculture + dairy operation, the Agriculture Manager should coordinate with the Dairy Manager for:
- Napier/green fodder production.
- Maize/fodder cultivation.
- Paddy straw and crop-residue utilization.
- Cow manure collection.
- Compost production.
- Fodder inventory.
- Fodder requirement planning.
