Job Purpose To manage and oversee the day-to-day nursing operations of the Emergency Room, ensuring timely, safe, productive, and patient-centric care. The role will be responsible for nursing manpower, clinical standards, emergency preparedness, quality and patient safety, staff development, and coordination with doctors and other hospital departments.

Key Responsibilities

1. ER Nursing Operations

- Manage overall nursing operations and workflow in the Emergency Room.
- Ensure prompt assessment, triage, stabilization, treatment, and monitoring of patients.
- Ensure adequate nursing coverage across all ER areas and shifts.
- Monitor patient flow and coordinate with relevant departments for admissions, transfers, investigations, and discharges.
- Ensure availability and proper functioning of emergency equipment, medications, consumables, and supplies.

2. Team Management & Manpower Planning

- Lead, supervise, and guide the ER nursing team.
- Prepare and manage duty rosters as per patient volume and operational requirements.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, leave, and staffing requirements.
- Identify manpower gaps and coordinate with the Nursing/HR team for recruitment and deployment.
- Conduct regular team meetings and communicate operational updates.

3. Clinical Quality & Patient Safety

- Ensure adherence to nursing protocols, clinical guidelines, and hospital SOPs.
- Monitor compliance with patient identification, medication safety, infection prevention, documentation, and emergency protocols.
- Ensure proper nursing documentation and handover practices.
- Monitor and report clinical incidents, near misses,



and adverse events.
- Support implementation of quality improvement initiatives.

4. Emergency Preparedness

- Ensure the nursing team is prepared to handle medical emergencies, trauma, cardiac emergencies, and mass casualty situations.
- Ensure readiness for Code Blue and other emergency response protocols.
- Conduct/mock drills and emergency preparedness training as required.
- Ensure emergency equipment and crash carts are checked and maintained as per protocol.

5. Staff Training & Development

- Identify training and competency requirements of ER nursing staff.
- Conduct or coordinate induction, clinical training, skill development, and competency assessments.
- Mentor junior nurses and support career development.
- Ensure staff are trained in BLS/ACLS and other relevant emergency-care competencies as applicable.

6. Coordination & Communication

- Coordinate effectively with Emergency Physicians, consultants, Nursing Administration, ICU, OT, Diagnostics, Pharmacy, Billing, and other departments.
- Handle patient/attendant escalations related to nursing services.
- Ensure effective shift handovers and communication between teams.
- Escalate critical operational and clinical issues to the appropriate authority.

7. Quality, Compliance & Audit

- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, statutory requirements, and applicable NABH standards.
- Participate in internal audits, nursing audits, quality reviews, and accreditation activities.
- Monitor nursing KPIs and prepare periodic reports.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions based on audit findings.
