Role & responsibilities A Chief Risk Officer (CRO) is responsible for safeguarding both the firm itself and investors' assets across all fund schemes.
Unlike CROs in traditional bankingwho focus heavily on loan defaults and balance-sheet solvency—a mutual fund CRO operates at the intersection of investment management, fiduciary duty, operational stability, and regulatory mandates.
Core Areas of Responsibility
- Investment & Portfolio Risk Oversight
Market Risk: Uses quantitative models (Value at Risk / VaR, tracking error, beta range, duration) to monitor fund exposures against internal and benchmark thresholds.
Liquidity Risk: Conducts stress testing and redemption analysis to ensure funds retain sufficient liquid assets to meet high investor redemption demands without triggering fire sales.
Credit & Counterparty Risk: Evaluates debt securities, credit ratings, default risks, and counterparty exposure in money market and fixed-income schemes.
Concentration Risk: Monitors sector, asset class, issuer, and distributor concentration levels to prevent over-exposure.
- Scheme-Level Governance & Mandate Adherence
Ensures each fund operates strictly within the investment limits set in its Scheme Information Document (SID)
and regulatory guidelines.
Monitors the Risk-o-Meter or risk rating matrix assigned to mutual fund products, ensuring accurate risk labeling for retail investors.
Oversees dealing room activities, trade allocations, and inter-scheme transfers to prevent front-running, self-dealing, or conflicts of interest.
- Operational & Cyber Risk Management
Sets up controls for fund accounting, daily NAV computation, transfer agency functions, and unit pricing accuracy.
Oversees cybersecurity, IT infrastructure resilience, data privacy, and third-party vendor risks (e.g., custodian or registrar dependencies).
Formulates fraud risk registers and incident escalation matrices to detect and address internal or market malpractices.
- Regulatory Compliance & Stress Testing
Performs mandatory periodic stress testing for investment, credit, and liquidity risk scenarios.
Ensures adherence to regulatory frameworks mandated by financial oversight bodies (e.g., SEC in the US, SEBI in India, FCA in the UK).
Serves as a key liaison to the Board of Directors, Board Risk Management Committee, and Trustee Boards.
