About Newton School of Technology (NST)
Newton School of Technology (NST) is a contemporary institution dedicated to redefining technical education in India. Founded by alumni of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), NST offers a four-year B.Tech program in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing experiential learning, interdisciplinary learning, and strong industry engagement.
Within two years of its establishment, over 93% of NST students have secured paid internships with leading organizations such as Razorpay, SarvamAI, and DRDO, along with exposure to global technology ecosystems through academic immersions in Singapore and Silicon Valley.
NST is led by a distinguished faculty comprising ICPC World Finalists and experienced professionals from organizations including ISRO, Microsoft, MakeMyTrip, and other prominent technology firms. The institution is committed to developing a scalable, high-impact academic model that equips graduates with the skills required for advanced roles in technology and engineering.
About the Role
Newton School of Technology invites applications for the position of Maker Space Manager (Robotics) within the interdisciplinary engineering and science department.
This role is ideal for hardware experts, makers, and innovators with strong technical expertise in Robotics, Mechatronics, and Prototyping who are passionate about running a world-class innovation hub. The selected candidate will manage the day-to-day operations, hardware engineering setups, and safety of the Maker Space, while serving as the core technical mentor for students bringing their engineering ideas to life.
Rather than formal classroom lecturing, this role focuses on hands-on execution—cultivating an active "builder culture," maintaining cutting-edge machinery, guiding student hardware projects, and collaborating with faculty to support the practical components of the B.Tech curriculum.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maker Space Operations & Lab Management
- Daily Operations: Oversee the daily function, organization, and scheduling of the Robotics Maker Space, ensuring it remains an optimal environment for rapid prototyping.
- Asset & Inventory Management:
Maintain a precise inventory of hardware toolkits, consumables, electronic components, and heavy prototyping tools.
- Procurement: Manage vendor relations, evaluate new engineering equipment, and lead the sourcing/procurement of robotic kits, microcontrollers, sensors, and raw materials.
- Safety & Compliance: Establish, update, and strictly enforce laboratory safety protocols, machine operating procedures, and hazard guidelines for all users.
2. Technical Mentorship & Project Guidance
- Hands-on Mentorship: Serve as the resident expert to guide students through the design, fabrication, and testing phases of their robotics projects.
- Engineering Consultation: Provide technical feedback on hardware architecture, troubleshooting circuitry, mechanical design, and embedded code optimization.
- Project Domains: Assist students building diverse systems including autonomous ground vehicles, drones, robotic arms, IoT networks, and smart automation devices.
- Hackathons & Competitions: Support and prepare student teams representing NST in national and international robotics and hacking competitions.
3. Academic & Curriculum Support
- Practical Learning Modules: Collaborate with faculty across Computer Science, AI, and Engineering to design and set up the physical hardware infrastructure needed for lab assignments.
- Skills Workshops: Design and conduct practical bootcamps, safety training sessions, and technical workshops (e.G., introduction to 3D printing, CAD, ROS, or soldering).
- Capstone Support: Manage the spatial and technical resources required by final-year students executing advanced capstone projects.
4. Industry Alignment & Community Building
- Culture Creation: Foster a highly collaborative, energetic, and open-access "maker culture" that inspires creative problem-solving and independent innovation.
- Technology Upgrades:
Stay updated with global trends in automation, AI-integrated robotics, and manufacturing to continuously upgrade the Maker Space capabilities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Master’s degree / PhD in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required
- Experience: 1+ years of hands-on experience working in a high-tech makerspace, fab-lab, R&D; prototyping facility, or robotics product development environment.
- Proven Track Record: Demonstrated experience in building functional robotic systems, mechanical fabrication, electronic circuit debugging, and lab infrastructure management.
- Mindset: A strong commitment to student development, collaborative engineering, and experiential learning.
Required Skills
Technical Competencies
- Hardware Prototyping: Deep hands-on experience with Microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, STM32) and working knowledge of sensors, actuators, and drivers.
- Fabrication Tools: Proficiency in operating lab equipment (oscilloscopes, function generators, soldering stations) and fabrication machinery (3D printers, laser cutters, CNC tools preferred).
- Design & CAD: Strong skills in CAD software (SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion 360, or AutoCAD) for structural modeling and enclosure design.
- Software Frameworks: Familiarity with Python and/or C++ programming, and standard robotics frameworks (ROS/ROS2 is highly valued).
- AI/CV Integration: Basic awareness of integrating computer vision and machine learning models with physical hardware (good to have).
Professional Skills
- Leadership & Organization: Excellent logistics, scheduling, and organizational skills to run an efficient, multi-user facility.
- Communication: Ability to break down complex hardware and mechanical principles into transparent, actionable advice for learners.
- Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting agility—both for mechanical/electrical bugs and operational space logistics.
- Collaboration: A proactive team player who can successfully bridge the gap between academic theory and physical realization.
