We are seeking an experienced Substation Automation / Protection Engineer to lead protection, control, and automation design for US utility-scale generation and interconnection projects. The role is not limited to solar - it covers Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Natural Gas Generation Facilities, collector substations, switching stations, and transmission interconnections from 12 kV through 500 kV. The engineer will define the protection philosophy of the substation, perform short-circuit and relay coordination studies, and configure and integrate protective relays and automation systems, with a strong focus on the SEL platform and AcSELerator tools.

The position requires hands-on US market experience and a strong working knowledge of IEEE standards, IEC 61850, NERC CIP, and ISO/RTO interconnection requirements. The engineer will produce high-quality, compliant protection and SCADA deliverables, collaborate closely with project managers, clients, utilities, and vendors, and support design, laboratory validation, and field commissioning.

- Develop and own the protection philosophy of the substation for transmission, distribution, generator, transformer, bus, feeder, capacitor bank, and line protection applications.
- Prepare relay one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, communication architectures, and protection settings.
- Design, configure, test, and commission substation protection, automation, SCADA, and communication systems for Solar PV, BESS, Natural Gas Generation Facilities, collector substations, switching stations, and transmission interconnections (12 kV through 500 kV).

- Perform short-circuit studies and analysis to establish fault levels, verify equipment duty, and provide inputs for relay settings.
- Perform relay coordination studies and complete relay coordination calculations to ensure selective, secure, and dependable protection.
- Carry out arc-flash assessments (IEEE 1584), breaker-failure schemes, synch-check applications, transfer trip schemes, remedial action schemes (RAS), and system stability-related protection reviews.

- Select, configure, and program protective relays, RTACs, HMIs, and gateways, with expert-level knowledge of SEL relays and RTACs.
- Use the SEL AcSELerator tool suite to develop settings and logic, and integrate SEL devices into the wider substation automation and SCADA system.
- Work with other utility-grade equipment including GE Vernova, Siemens, Schneider Electric, ABB/Hitachi Energy, and Beckwith.
- Integrate multi-vendor IEDs with protection settings and logic, coordinating measurements, controls, alarms, and event data with SCADA and HMI systems.

- Implement IEC 61850 for substation automation and protection.
- Design and configure SCADA systems using DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101/104, IEC 61850, Modbus RTU/TCP, OPC UA, and other utility communication protocols.
- Develop SCADA point lists, communication maps, telemetry databases, ICCP interfaces, alarm management philosophies, and historian integration for generation and utility interconnection projects.
- Produce engineering documentation including network specifications, SCL models, timing plans, interface definitions, and system diagrams used across design, laboratory validation, and field implementation.

- Apply cybersecurity and NERC CIP hardware and software requirements and implement these standards in real-world designs.
- Support utility interconnection requirements and compliance with ISO/RTO standards including CAISO, MISO, PJM, ERCOT, SPP, NYISO, and ISO-NE.

- Collaborate with project managers, technical leads, clients, utilities, and vendors to align designs with project goals, operational requirements, and industry best practices.
- Support testing, laboratory validation, and field commissioning of protection and automation systems.

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from a recognized, accredited program (required).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred).

- Understanding of protection and automation requirements for utility-scale Solar PV, standalone BESS, Natural Gas Power Plants, and high-voltage substations.
- Knowledge of US utility interconnection practices and ISO/RTO requirements.

- Minimum 5 years of experience in substation protection, automation, and control engineering.
- US market experience is mandatory – hands-on work on US utility-scale projects, utility interconnections, and ISO/RTO/NERC requirements.
- Past experience on renewable energy (Solar PV / BESS) or Natural Gas generation projects.
- Demonstrated experience in short-circuit studies, relay coordination, relay settings development and configuration, and field commissioning.
- Proven ability to develop protection philosophies for substations, generation interconnections, and transmission projects.
