Position Summary

We are seeking a retired naval officer with strong seamanship background and hands-on experience in shipboard evolutions to serve as a Seamanship Advisor throughout the bidding, design, construction, and acceptance of Naval ships. The candidate will participate during design reviews, construction oversight, and trials/acceptance activities, ensuring the vessel's layout, equipment, and systems are safe, efficient and comply with Naval regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Design Stage

- Do the estimates for all the seamanship gear and the other related outfitting items including the deck fittings during the bidding stage.

- Review ship design drawings and 3D models (deck layouts, mooring/anchoring arrangements, replenishment-at-sea (RAS) and fuelling-at-sea stations (FAS), boat handling/davit systems, towing arrangements, life-saving appliance stowage, and bridge/upper-deck sightlines) from an operational seamanship perspective.

- Advise designers on the ergonomics, spacing, and safety of working decks, capstans, winches, bollards, fairleads, chocks, and associated deck fittings.

- Provide inputs on anchor and cable handling systems, replenishment gear, towing arrangements, and boat/craft launch-and-recovery systems.

- Highlight design deficiencies that could compromise crew safety or operational effectiveness during evolutions such as mooring, anchoring, RAS, boat operations, and man-overboard recovery.

- Participate in design reviews, and 3D model walkthroughs, representing the end-user/operator viewpoint.

Recent Construction and Ship Repair

- Be a part of the field design cell to support production and design





- Conduct periodic site visits to the shipyard to inspect ongoing construction/outfitting of seamanship-related equipment and spaces.

- Verify that installed equipment (winches, capstans, davits, fairleads, RAS rigs, towing gear, etc.) conform to the approved design and is suitable for intended evolutions.

- Liaise/ advise the production team, project management team, procurement and other stakeholders.

- Discuss with WOT or ship owner representatives to address and resolve any seamanship-related issues.

- Work closely with Procurement and design to help select the proper seamanship items

- Advise and participate where necessary in docking related activities and ship repair activities

- Review and comment on technical specifications, equipment technical data packages, and vendor equipment selection for seamanship systems.

Trials & Acceptance

- Assist in preparation of seamanship-related sections of the Ship Acceptance Trials (SAT)/Harbour Acceptance Trials (HAT) protocols and checklists.

- Participate in harbour and sea trials, evaluating the functionality and safety of anchoring, mooring, towing, boat handling, RAS, FAS and other seamanship evolutions.

- Identify and document discrepancies, unsafe conditions,



or operational shortfalls observed during trials, and recommend corrective action.

- Certify/endorse the seamanship-readiness of the vessel prior to final acceptance and commissioning.

- Provide inputs to ship's staff/crew on operational employment of seamanship equipment, as required.

Required Qualifications & Experience

- Retired Naval Officer (Executive Branch / Seaman Branch) with substantial sea-going experience on Naval ships or Deck Officer with sea-going experience on commercial ships or Mechanical engineer or Naval Architect with experience in design for seamanship, deck fittings, RAS, FAS with understanding on seamanship and deck operations, rigging practices etc.

- Demonstrated hands-on experience in seamanship evolutions, including anchoring, mooring, towing, replenishment at sea and boat operations is preferable.

- Familiarity with acceptance trial protocols is highly desirable

- Sound understanding of relevant safety standards of naval regulations or IMO regulations concerning shipboard evolutions and other deck operations are required.

- Attention to detail, especially regarding safety-critical equipment and procedures.

- Willingness to travel to shipyard
