nWe make physical things.

nThings you hold, open, close, twist, squeeze, apply, dispense and occasionally wonder why nobody designed better in the first place.

nNeural Hinge is looking for three Physical Product Designers to join us in Delhi.

nWe work on applicators, dispensing systems, packaging, mechanisms and physical product experiences, mostly across beauty, skincare, personal care, healthcare and adjacent categories.

nAnd quite often, on things that don't have a convenient category yet.

nWhat you will actually do

nYou will take problems, observations and half formed ideas and give them physical form.

nSometimes there will be a proper brief.

nSometimes there will be a reference product and a conversation.

nSometimes someone will put three unrelated objects on the table and ask:

n“What if these had a child?”

nYou will sketch.

nYou will think in three dimensions.

nYou will explore form, proportion, interaction, material, movement and detail.

nYou will draw.

nYou will render.

nYou will prototype.

nYou will work alongside people figuring out mechanisms, materials, manufacturing and IP.

nAnd you will watch some very good looking ideas die because they don't work.

nThen make better ones.

nThat last bit is critical.

nAt Neural Hinge, a design eventually has to leave the screen.

nSomeone has to hold it.

nUse it.

nManufacture it.

nBuy it.

nAnd preferably want to pick it up again.

nWhat we are looking for

nExperience is genuinely no bar.

nYou could have spent 12 years designing products.

nYou could have spent two.

nYou could still be in college and be unusually positive.

nYour education matters. Your portfolio matters. Your software skills matter.





nBut we are interested in something underneath all of those.

nCan you see?

nCan you notice something other people walk past?

nCan you look at an ordinary object and wonder why it is shaped that way?

nCan you tell when a proportion is slightly wrong before you can quite explain why?

nCan you take an unclear problem and find several possible physical answers rather than waiting for somebody to tell you what to draw?

nCan you move between imagination and reality without becoming too precious about either?

nThat is much closer to what we are looking for.

nThree things matter a lot here

nIntelligence. Determination. Integrity.

nIntelligence, for us, includes curiosity, observation, judgement and the ability to make connections between things that don't obviously belong together.

nDetermination means you can stay with an idea after version three wasn't nearly as brilliant as it looked in your head.

nIntegrity means we can trust your work, your word and your contribution.

nWe can teach categories.

nWe can teach processes.

nWe can teach you a surprising amount about applicators, dispensing systems, plastics, elastomers, manufacturing and why a 0.3 mm change can occasionally ruin everybody's afternoon.

nCuriosity is considerably harder to install.

nWe spend a slightly unreasonable amount of time thinking about how products interact with people.

nHow something feels in the hand.

nHow it opens.

nHow it dispenses.

nHow it applies.

nHow much control it gives you.

nWhat happens when material, mechanism and form start affecting each other.

nAnd whether changing one tiny thing can make the whole experience better.

nYou do not need to arrive knowing the beauty industry.

nIn fact, we are interested in people coming from industrial design, consumer products, automotive, appliances, furniture, toys, medical devices, footwear, consumer electronics and places we haven't thought of.

nGood ideas are promiscuous. They travel between industries surprisingly well.

nBefore you apply

nPlease send us your CV and portfolio.

nBut don't make the portfolio beautiful for our benefit.

nWe would rather understand how you think.

nShow us the sketches before the render.

nShow us alternatives you killed.

nShow us something that failed.

nShow us the ugly prototype.

nShow us the idea you still love even though nobody else did.

nAnd if there is one physical thing you have designed, made, modified or figured out that you are unusually proud of, make sure we can find it.

nTell us what the problem was.

nTell us what you actually did.

nTell us what changed between the first idea and the final one.

nWe are considerably more interested in the journey between those two points than another perfectly lit render on a white background.
