Position: Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) – Biology

Department: Senior Secondary – Science

Classes: IX - XII, with academic support to other classes whenever required

Reporting To: Principal / Academic Coordinator / School Management

Employment Type: Full-Time

ROLE PURPOSE The PGT Biology teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality Biology education at the Senior Secondary level while contributing actively to the overall academic, examination, laboratory, pastoral and co-curricular functioning of St. Xavier’s High School.

The teacher is expected not only to complete the prescribed syllabus but also to develop conceptual understanding, scientific thinking, practical skills, examination readiness, discipline and academic confidence among students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Classroom Teaching

- Teach Biology to Classes XI and XII as per the prescribed school/board curriculum.
- Explain concepts in a clear, structured and student-friendly manner.
- Build strong conceptual understanding instead of encouraging rote learning.
- Relate biological concepts to real-life situations, health, workplace, biotechnology and current scientific applications wherever appropriate.
- Use diagrams, specimens, models, charts, presentations, demonstrations and other teaching aids effectively.
- Maintain a suitable balance between theory, diagrams, numerical/data-based questions, application-based questions and practical understanding.
- Ensure that every student maintains proper class notes, diagrams and academic records.
- Regularly check notebooks, assignments and practical records.

1. Academic Planning

- Prepare annual academic plans, monthly plans and chapter-wise teaching plans.
- Follow the school academic calendar and complete the syllabus within prescribed timelines.
- Maintain appropriate lesson planning before classroom instruction.
- Plan chapter completion, revision and testing systematically.
- Coordinate teaching with examination schedules and school activities.
- Identify chapters requiring additional teaching time and plan accordingly.
- Maintain records of syllabus completion for every section taught.

1. Biology Practical & Laboratory Responsibilities

- Conduct all Biology practicals prescribed for Classes XI and XII.
- Ensure students understand the objective, procedure, observation, result and precautions for every experiment.
- Teach students proper use of microscopes, slides, specimens, laboratory equipment and biological materials.
- Supervise preparation and maintenance of students' practical files and records.
- Prepare students thoroughly for practical examinations and viva voce.
- Maintain laboratory discipline and safety.




- Ensure proper handling and storage of specimens, chemicals, slides, models and equipment.
- Report damaged, missing or required laboratory materials in time.
- Assist the school in preparing the Biology laboratory for internal and external practical examinations.
- Maintain laboratory stock and requirement records wherever assigned.
- Coordinate with laboratory assistants and the administration regarding laboratory requirements.

1. Student Academic Monitoring

- Maintain awareness of the academic performance of every student taught.

1. Homework, Assignments & Practice

- Give meaningful and appropriate homework.
- Provide worksheets, diagrams, assignments, revision exercises and question practice.
- Check assigned work regularly.
- Avoid giving work merely for completion; assignments should contribute to conceptual understanding or examination preparation.
- Maintain consistency in academic expectations across sections.

1. Student Discipline & Classroom Management

Every teacher is responsible for maintaining the culture and discipline of the school. The PGT Biology teacher must:
- Maintain discipline during teaching periods.
- Ensure punctual entry into and exit from classes.
- Monitor student behaviour, attendance and classroom participation.
- Ensure students maintain proper uniforms, classroom behaviour and academic discipline as per school rules.
- Address misconduct professionally.
- Report serious or repeated disciplinary concerns to the appropriate authority.
- Never leave a class unattended without permission or proper arrangement.

1. Attendance & Student Records

- Take accurate student attendance wherever assigned.
- Monitor frequent absenteeism.
- Maintain academic records required by the school.
- Complete marks entry, student remarks and other records within prescribed deadlines.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.

1. Parent Interaction & PTMs

- Attend all Parent-Teacher Meetings assigned by the school.
- Discuss student performance with parents objectively and professionally.
- Explain areas of strength, weakness, attendance, discipline and required improvement.
- Avoid making unverified or inappropriate remarks regarding students.
- Maintain constructive communication with parents.
- Escalate serious concerns to the school administration whenever required.

1. Morning Assembly & School Duties





The teacher will participate in regular school operations, including:
- Morning assembly duties.
- Corridor/classroom supervision.
- Dispersal duties.
- Examination duties.
- Invigilation.
- Substitution periods.
- Student movement and discipline duties.
- Event supervision.
- Duties assigned during school functions and special programmes.

Teachers are expected to perform assigned school duties responsibly even when they fall outside their normal classroom timetable.
1. Substitution & Additional Academic Support

- Take substitution periods when assigned.
- Support other Science classes or academic activities when required.
- Assist students during revision, examination or special academic programmes.
- Cooperate with timetable adjustments made in the interest of the school.

1. Co-Curricular & Scientific Activities

The teacher should actively contribute to developing scientific interest among students through activities such as:
- Science exhibitions.
- Biology projects.
- Science quizzes.
- Model-making.
- Poster competitions.
- Environmental awareness programmes.
- Health and hygiene awareness activities.
- Plantation/environmental programmes.
- Science clubs.
- Inter-house and inter-school academic activities.
- Relevant competitions, exhibitions and Olympiads where conducted by the school.
- Identify weak, average and high-performing students.
- Maintain appropriate remedial and enrichment strategies.
- Conduct doubt-clearing sessions when required.
- Follow up with students who repeatedly fail to complete assignments, notebooks or practical records.
- Inform the coordinator/management about students requiring serious academic intervention.
- Work towards measurable improvement in student performance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

- Postgraduate degree in Biology / Zoology / Botany / Life Sciences or an equivalent relevant discipline from a recognised university.
- B.Ed. or equivalent recognised teaching qualification, wherever applicable.
- Strong command over Biology at the Senior Secondary level.
- Strong communication and classroom-management skills.

Our Expectation We are looking for a teacher who does not simply complete the Biology syllabus, but takes responsibility for the learning and development of the students.

The teacher should enter the classroom prepared, teach with clarity, monitor every student, maintain academic discipline, conduct practical work seriously, prepare students thoroughly for examinations and contribute positively to the larger functioning and academic culture of St. Xavier’s High School, Deoghar.

Pay: ₹35,000.00 - ₹40,000.00 per month
