Job Title : Engineering Manager Mechanical - Steering
Location: Bengaluru
Role
This role leads Mechanical Core & Architecture Engineering for Steering and Driveline, covering mechanical Bill of Design and variants, systems interfaces, benchmarking, materials and metallurgy, validation, supplier engineering, and reusable core methods. The manager translates product and functional strategy into measurable outcomes, provides independent technical direction, develops people and global capability, and owns execution, budgets, suppliers, risks and closure. The role reports to the Director of Product Engineering and works with Product Lines, global Tech Centers, plants, customers, suppliers and cross-domain engineering teams.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical commonization, reuse, variant strategy, value modelling and cost/manufacturability optimization within Bill of Design systems.
- Lead mechanical product development and architecture inputs across Steering and Driveline, ensuring requirements, interfaces, designs and verification evidence align with customer, regulatory, quality and roadmap needs.
- Lead mechanical teardown and benchmarking and convert findings into standards, product decisions, competitive gaps, cost opportunities and technical-roadmap actions.
- Own materials engineering, product/process metallurgy, failure analysis and manufacturing/supplier support; provide mechanical technical governance while coordinating cross-domain interfaces.
- Translate functional strategy into goals, roadmaps, capacity and resource plans, schedules, budgets, risks and measurable delivery outcomes.
Core Responsibilities
- Own delivery end to end by establishing executable plans, verifying status directly,
managing dependencies, recovering misses and closing actions without repeated supervisor follow-up.
- Challenge team and supplier assumptions using calculations, simulation, test evidence, manufacturing feasibility, lessons learned or appropriate SME review; retain accountability for technical decisions.
- Lead requirements flow-down, interfaces, design reviews, DFMEA/DRBFM, verification, release readiness and traceability, balancing timing with quality, cost, manufacturability, customer value and team learning.
- Lead supplier and manufacturing readiness covering child parts, raw materials, tooling, special processes, inspection, lead time, prototype capability, cost, capacity and alternative sources.
- Build direct relationships with global Tech Centers, plants, product lines and SMEs; lead work transfer through agreed scope, competence evidence, acceptance criteria and formal confirmation.
- Set priorities and decision rights, delegate effectively and hold owners accountable; maintain structured one-to-ones, objective capability assessment, coaching, performance management, succession and backup plans.
- Own headcount, capacity, TAP/program allocation, budgets, capital, tools, laboratories, external services and Statements of Work; validate technical, commercial and downstream implications before commitment.
- Establish operating rhythms that convert meetings into decisions, owners, timelines and closure, supported by forecasts, dashboards, minutes, handovers and timely attendance/time-booking discipline.
- Build reusable mechanical standards, methods, templates, requirement libraries and lessons learned; drive governed automation and AI-assisted engineering for repetitive checks, data extraction, reporting and workflow tracking.
- Lead structured problem solving across mechanical design, materials, manufacturing and field issues; escalate early with evidence, options and recommendations, and maintain technical breadth across Steering and Driveline.
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related fields.
Experience
- 18+ years of engineering experience, including substantial leadership in automotive mechanical product development for Steering.
- Demonstrated accountability for mechanical architecture, design, analysis, validation, manufacturing, suppliers, benchmarking, materials/process engineering, people development, budgets and global work transfer.
Required Skills
- Authoritative mechanical engineering judgment with ability to independently validate assumptions, lead technical reviews and make risk-based decisions.
- Solid knowledge of mechanical design, tolerancing, materials, manufacturing, DFM/DFA, durability, validation, failure analysis, NVH fundamentals and supplier development.
Ability to translate strategy into priorities, schedules, resource/budget plans, dashboards and closed-loop execution.
