The Opportunity:

Infrastructure is ageing globally, with a growing pipeline of renewals and bridge upgrade projects. This role sits at the heart of a new Bangalore-based team that will work in close partnership with UK colleagues to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions and help Arup become a market leader in rail renewals. This is an exciting opportunity for you to lead and shape a new rapidly growing team in Arup.

You will lead the Railway Bridges and Civil Structures capability within the Arup Bangalore Rail team, acting as the UK-facing single point of contact for bridge renewals and ageing assets work. You will be responsible for technical excellence, quality, efficient project delivery and the development of a high-performing team that supports UK and local rail renewals programmes.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, assessment, refurbishment and strengthening of railway bridges, culverts, retaining walls and associated civil structures across concept, feasibility, detailed design and construction support stages.

- Lead the design of bridges and civil structures through optioneering, feasibility, selection of options, preliminary design, outline design, detailed design, delivering construction information and supporting clients and contractors through the construction phase of a project.




- Lead structural assessments of ageing assets, including appraisal of condition information, identification of intervention needs and development of practical renewal or life-extension solutions.
- Oversee the preparation and review of calculations, technical reports, specifications, drawings and BIM-enabled deliverables to a consistently high standard.
- Provide technical leadership on UK rail standards and design governance, including the application of Eurocodes and relevant Network Rail requirements.
- Plan, resource and coordinate delivery across the Bangalore structures team, ensuring work is delivered safely, on programme, to budget and in accordance with project quality requirements.
- Act as the primary interface with UK project managers, discipline leads and bridge renewals teams, ensuring strong communication, effective integration and responsive delivery.
- Lead internal design reviews and checking activities, support robust technical assurance and drive continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
- Mentor, coach and develop engineers and technicians, creating a strong technical culture and supporting long-term capability growth in Bangalore.
- Support business development through technical input to bids, methodologies,



work winning conversations and delivery approaches that improve competitiveness in the renewals market.
- Promote digital delivery, repeatable design approaches and innovation that improve productivity and support blended UK-India delivery.

If this role right for you

- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; a master's degree is advantageous.
- Minimum of 12 years post-graduate experience in the design, assessment and renewal of bridges and civil structures, ideally within rail infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of structural behavior, assessment methodologies, strengthening techniques and the management of existing assets.
- Experience using structural analysis tools such as MIDAS, SOFiSTiK, GSA, Strand7, SAP2000 or similar.
- Working knowledge of Eurocodes and experience applying standards used by Network Rail and/or other comparable rail authorities.
- Good working knowledge of design development tools such as Bentley Microstation is essential.
- Proven track record of leading technical delivery, managing interfaces and mentoring others within multidisciplinary project environments.
- Experience of working with international consultants and, ideally, familiarity with UK rail design workflows namely GRIP governance, leading IDC, IDR workshops, standards and approval expectations.
- Strong communication, collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
- Chartered status, or equivalent progression toward professional recognition, is strongly preferred.
