Role Summery: The Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the efficient operation of a laboratory or research facility. This position involves assisting scientists, researchers, and educators in various laboratory tasks, maintaining equipment and supplies, and ensuring a safe and organized working environment.

Roles & Responsibilities:

1. Maintenance:

- Taking care of laboratory equipment and apparatus
- Carrying out and arranging for maintenance and repair of resources
- Constructing and modifying apparatus
- Stock taking and organizing the storing of chemicals and equipment
- Obtaining materials by local purchase
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, including washing glassware, disposing of waste properly, and keeping workstations tidy and safe functioning.
- Arrange and label specimens, materials, and equipment for easy access.
- Report any malfunctioning equipment to the Laboratory Manager and assist in coordinating repairs or replacements.

2. Operational

- Trialing practical activities
- Making up solutions, assembling apparatus, delivering equipment to rooms.
- Occasionally assisting in class practical including carrying out demonstration.
- Collecting, checking and returning equipment to stores.
- General Laboratory cleaning: bench surfaces and fixed equipment (laboratory sinks, emptying/supervising the emptying of sink traps)
- Disposing of waste materials
- Prepare, label, and organize samples or specimens for experiments and research purposes.
- Follow precise instructions to measure, mix, and dilute substances as required.

3. Inventory Management:

- Monitor and manage inventory levels of chemicals, reagents,



and laboratory supplies.
- Order and restock materials as needed, maintaining accurate records of inventory.

4. Technical:

- Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities
- Providing technical support to experienced and trainee teachers including health and safety guidance
- Keeping up to date with developments in practical science and health and safety requirements
- Carrying out health and safety checks on laboratories, prep rooms and stores
- Assist researchers, scientists, or educators in conducting experiments, including setting up apparatus, monitoring processes, and collecting data.
- Follow experimental protocols and procedures diligently.

5. Secondary Responsibilities:

- Attend and participate in staff and working group meetings and training as appropriate.
- Perform other related duties as required
- Collaborate with laboratory staff, researchers, and educators to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
- Provide support during demonstrations and experiments for educational purposes.

6. Lab Safety Compliance:

- Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Ensure safety equipment, such as eyewash stations and fire extinguishers, is in working order.

7. Data Recording:





- Record and document experimental data, observations, and test results accurately.
- Assist researchers or scientists in organizing and maintaining research records.

8. Lab Cleanliness and Organization:

- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, including washing glassware, disposing of waste properly, and keeping workstations tidy.
- Arrange and label specimens, materials, and equipment for easy access.

Skills Needed:

- Graduate/Post Graduate from recognized university/institutions in relevant field, additional coursework or certification in laboratory techniques is a plus.
- Prior teaching experience highly preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
- Good understanding of laboratory information systems and automated laboratory equipment, Strong attention to detail and accuracy in handling materials and recording data.
