ABOUT COTTON & CLAY
Cotton & Clay is building a digital-first fashion and lifestyle brand for the Indian market, combining premium-quality apparel, international sourcing, technology-enabled operations and an exceptional online shopping experience.
With our initial commercial launch planned for January 2027, we're building a leadership team with the experience and ambition to create a competitive, technology-driven fashion business.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We're hiring a Head of E-Commerce & Digital Trading to take ownership of our online store's commercial performance, digital merchandising and customer shopping experience.
You'll work closely with Technology, Product, Brand & Marketing, Finance and Supply Chain to build an e-commerce operation that delivers profitable growth.
This isn't a website management position. We need someone who understands fashion retail, customer behaviour, merchandising economics and what it takes to turn online traffic into profitable sales.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- E-Commerce Strategy & Commercial Performance
- Develop and execute our D2C e-commerce strategy, commercial roadmap and online trading plans.
- Own online revenue, conversion, average order value, contribution margins and commercial performance against approved targets.
- Establish pricing execution, promotional calendars and trading strategies in collaboration with Product and Finance.
- Monitor sales performance, customer behaviour and profitability to identify commercial opportunities.
- Digital Merchandising & Customer Experience
- Own the online shopping experience, product presentation, navigation, search, filtering and merchandising.
- Collaborate with Product and Creative teams on product listings, photography, descriptions and size guides.
- Develop cross-selling, upselling, product recommendation and personalisation strategies.
- Identify and resolve customer journey friction, particularly across mobile shopping and checkout.
- Conversion & Performance Optimisation
- Establish conversion optimisation processes using analytics, customer insights and structured experimentation.
- Monitor acquisition-to-purchase funnels, checkout abandonment and product-level conversion.
- Work with the CTO to prioritise technical improvements that deliver measurable commercial benefits.
- Collaborate with Brand & Marketing on campaign landing pages, traffic quality and customer acquisition economics.
- Inventory & Digital Trading
- Work with Product, Procurement and Warehouse Operations to maintain accurate online product availability.
- Monitor product sell-through, stock availability, size-level performance and replenishment requirements.
- Develop trading responses to slow-moving products, seasonal demand and inventory imbalances.
- Coordinate product launches, collection changes and promotional execution across the digital storefront.
- Customer Retention & Commercial Analytics
- Develop customer retention, repeat-purchase and lifecycle commerce strategies in collaboration with Marketing.
- Establish dashboards covering revenue, conversion, customer acquisition costs, returns and contribution margins.
- Analyse customer cohorts, purchase behaviour and product performance.
- Use customer and commercial data to improve merchandising and trading decisions.
- Launch Readiness & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Own the commercial readiness of our e-commerce operations ahead of launch.
- Coordinate product catalogue readiness, checkout testing, payment processes, customer communications and order fulfilment workflows.
- Establish operating procedures for digital trading, product launches and promotional activities.
- Work with the CTO on platform performance, analytics accuracy and production readiness.
- Build and manage an efficient e-commerce team as the business scales.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in fashion, apparel, lifestyle retail or D2C e-commerce.
- At least 3 years in an e-commerce trading, digital merchandising or online commercial leadership position.
- Demonstrated experience managing commercial performance for an established, transaction-generating e-commerce business.
- Proven ownership of online revenue, conversion optimisation, digital merchandising and commercial KPIs.
- Strong understanding of fashion retail economics, product margins, inventory turnover and customer acquisition costs.
- Practical experience using e-commerce analytics, customer behaviour data and conversion optimisation tools.
- Experience coordinating product, marketing, technology and fulfilment functions.
- Demonstrated ability to manage commercial budgets and deliver measurable business results.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Previous leadership experience with an established fashion retailer, apparel brand or successful D2C fashion business.
- Experience launching or scaling an e-commerce business in India.
- Exposure to premium or premium-accessible fashion categories.
- Experience with personalisation, AI-assisted merchandising and customer lifecycle management.
- Familiarity with contemporary e-commerce platforms, analytics tools and integrated retail operating systems.
- Experience managing omnichannel retail operations.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Someone who understands that traffic doesn't pay the bills. Profitable transactions do.
You should know how customers shop for fashion online, why they abandon purchases and how merchandising, pricing, product availability and customer experience influence commercial performance.
We're looking for someone commercially sharp, analytically strong and comfortable taking ownership of results.
You'll need to work effectively in a startup environment, make decisions with imperfect information and build an e-commerce operation that can scale without unnecessary complexity.
HOW WE'LL MEASURE SUCCESS
- Successful commercial readiness and launch of our online store.
- Revenue, conversion and contribution margin performance.
- Average order value and customer repeat-purchase performance.
- Product availability, sell-through and inventory efficiency.
- Customer acquisition economics and retention performance.
- Reliability of digital trading operations and commercial reporting.
