We’re Hiring: Freelance Copyeditor

DataWorks is looking for an experienced Freelance Copyeditor to support our publishing projects. We are seeking someone with a strong command of English, excellent attention to detail, and solid experience working with bibliographies, references, citations, and publishing style guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

- Copyedit manuscripts for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, consistency, clarity, and readability.
- Identify and correct inconsistencies, ambiguities, and errors while preserving the author’s intended meaning and voice.
- Review and standardize references, citations, footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies.
- Apply and maintain in-house guidelines as well as established style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS).
- Apply the SBL Handbook of Style, 2nd edition (1999), where required, particularly for biblical studies, theological, and related academic content.
- Ensure consistency in the formatting of biblical references, quotations, abbreviations, notes, citations, and bibliographic entries according to the applicable SBL and Chicago style requirements.
- Prepare transparent and appropriate editorial queries when necessary.
- Work accurately within project specifications and agreed deadlines.

Core Requirements

- Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills.
- Strong command of written English,



including grammar, punctuation, and usage.
- Sound knowledge of bibliography, reference, and citation formatting.
- Good working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS).
- Familiarity with the SBL Handbook of Style, 2nd edition (1999), is required.
- Experience with biblical studies, theology, religious studies, or related academic content would be an advantage.
- Strong attention to detail and an ability to maintain consistency across long and complex manuscripts.
- Experience editing books, academic content, educational material, or other publishing projects is preferred.
- Ability to follow detailed client instructions, style sheets, and project-specific guidelines.
- Ability to work carefully with footnotes, endnotes, biblical references, scholarly citations, and bibliographies.
