We are seeking an experienced Fire Protection Engineer to lead fire protection and life safety design for US utility-scale energy projects, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Solar PV, natural gas generation facilities, substations, inverter stations, and auxiliary buildings. The role involves planning active and passive fire protection systems, performing hydraulic calculations, analysing fire dynamics and battery thermal runaway risks, and preparing Fire Protection Reports, Fire Hazard Analyses, and Fire Risk Assessments in compliance with NFPA, IFC, IBC, UL, FM Global, and AHJ requirements.

The position requires robust technical ownership — coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams, reviewing BESS vendor documentation, preparing permit packages, and leading resolution of comments from utilities, municipalities, fire authorities, and code officials. The engineer will ensure high-quality, code-compliant, and permittable fire protection deliverables across the project lifecycle.

- Develop fire protection and life safety designs for utility-scale BESS facilities, substations, inverter stations, and auxiliary buildings.
- Perform hydraulic calculations for fire protection systems.
- Review battery enclosure layouts for fire separation distances and emergency access requirements.

- Analyse fire dynamics, model fire behaviour, and inspect industrial or commercial sites for latent hazards.
- Prepare Fire Protection Reports (FPR), Fire Hazard Analyses (FHA), and Fire Risk Assessments (FRA).

- Evaluate battery technologies and associated thermal runaway risks.
- Develop thermal runaway mitigation strategies for lithium-ion battery systems.

- Review architectural and building drawings to ensure adherence to safety regulations and building codes.
- Apply NFPA standards as they relate to Solar PV, BESS, and natural gas generation facilities.
- Support compliance with NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 72, NFPA 13, NFPA 25, International Fire Code (IFC), International Building Code (IBC), UL 9540, UL 9540A, FM Global requirements, and local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.

- Prepare permit application packages and technical responses.
- Attend design review meetings with utilities, municipalities, and fire authorities.
- Review comments from code officials and lead resolution efforts.

- Review BESS vendor documentation, including battery container fire protection designs, UL 9540A test reports, emergency response plans, and hazard mitigation reports.

- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related science field (required).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred).

- Experience preparing Fire Hazard Analyses and permitting documentation.
