ABOUT THE ROLE
H2L Robotics India builds and supports agricultural robotics for European growers. Our machines drive through greenhouses and fields, find diseased or unwanted plants by camera, and remove them with a laser. We do the electronics, the mechanical design and the data work behind them, from Mumbai.
We are hiring our first electronics engineer to own that electronics work as it grows. One of these machines carries well over a thousand component lines across nine modules — power conversion, laser drive, motor control, sensing, cable looms and PCB sub-assemblies — and today almost all of it is bought in Europe. Our job over the next few years is to design and build more of it here, better suited to what the machines actually need and at a fraction of what importing it costs.
You will be the engineer who does that. You will report to the director and work directly with our engineers in the Netherlands. There is no electronics team above or below you yet, so what you design is what we build, and the capability you bring stays with the company.
WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON
- Power electronics: constant-current drivers, DC-DC conversion and the power architecture of machines running from 48 V systems
- Battery and power systems for handheld field instruments and mobile platforms, including charging and protection
- Motor drive and actuation for the machine platforms
- Sensing and embedded control: STM32-based boards, CAN networks, GNSS and RTK positioning, thermal and optical sensing
- The electrical sub-assemblies of the machines themselves — cable looms, interconnects and the PCBs inside them
- Localisation: finding, qualifying and designing Indian-made alternatives to imported assemblies, and proving they hold up
YOUR FIRST PROJECT A laser diode driver, to replace a laboratory-grade OEM unit that costs roughly twenty times what this application needs because it delivers roughly twenty times the capability we use.
A constant-current source: 48 V in, 0-3.6 A out into 70-80 V, stable within 0.1 A, switching fully on or off in under 0.1 ms, with current, voltage and temperature sensing, STM32 control and CAN. The target is about a twentieth of what we pay now, at 100-unit quantities,
with the first production batch wanted in December 2026.
It is a real deadline on a real board, and it is a positive first project because it is self-contained and everything after it is bigger.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE In three months: a costed bill of materials telling us honestly whether the price target is reachable, a topology chosen and defended in writing, and prototype boards on the bench measured against the unit we buy today.
In a year: two or three of our boards in production, built and sourced in India, and a clear view of which of the imported assemblies we should take on next.
Beyond that: the electronics side of the hardware programme is yours to shape. Several projects are already waiting.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design power electronics and mixed-signal boards from requirements through schematic, layout, prototype and production release
- Produce BOM-first cost studies before committing to a design, so a price target is proved or ruled out while it is still inexpensive to change direction
- Select converter topologies, magnetics and switching devices, and document what each choice costs and what it risks
- Lay out PCBs in KiCad with thermal and EMC considerations, not the netlist alone
- Arrange fabrication and assembly, and manage relationships with Indian fabricators and component suppliers directly
- Bring boards up on the bench and debug them using an oscilloscope, electronic load and current probe
- Test against the units we currently buy, on the same load and the same measurements, and record the results
- Qualify Indian-made alternatives to imported electrical assemblies and prove they perform
- Write design notes and test reports that colleagues in the Netherlands can act on without needing a call
- Contribute STM32 firmware, or work closely with whoever writes it
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 4-5 years designing electronics that were built, sold and used — not simulated, and not coursework
- Solid switching power electronics: DC-DC conversion, constant-current or LED/laser drivers, or a clear account of why your work transfers
- Schematic capture and PCB layout performed personally, start to finish. KiCad preferred; Altium or OrCAD acceptable if you are willing to move
- At least one board taken through fabrication, assembly, bring-up and debugging when it did not work first time
- Practical bench measurement skill. You should be able to explain how you would measure a 0.1 ms rise time on a 3.6 A output, and what would make that measurement unreliable
- Sufficient embedded experience to read an STM32 datasheet, bring up a peripheral and work with CAN
- Written English clear enough for technical documentation read by colleagues abroad
- Bacheloru2019s degree in Electronics, Electrical or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent demonstrable experience
Preferred
- Battery systems: charging, protection and pack design
- Motor drive, BLDC control or robotics hardware
- STM32G4 and its high-resolution timer (HRTIM), or any digitally controlled converter
- EMC pre-compliance or CE marking experience
- Established Indian supplier and PCB fabrication contacts
- Experience localising imported designs to Indian manufacture
WHAT THIS ROLE IS NOT
- Not a test or maintenance position — you will be designing, not keeping an existing design running
- Not a team to join. You are the first electronics engineer here, and for a while the only one
- Not a place to learn power electronics. There is nobody here to teach it, which is precisely why we are recruiting for it
WHAT WE OFFER
- INR 12,00,000 - 15,00,000 per annum, depending on experience
- Three-month probation
- On-site at H2L Robotics India, 91Springboard, Vikhroli, Mumbai. The bench, the boards and the machines are here
- Ownership of products from specification to production, with a European client engaged directly
- A growing hardware programme to shape rather than a queue of tickets
