Commissioning Editor – Children’s & YA

About the Role

Educart is building a new Children’s & Young Adult publishing list for ages 8–14, covering licensed international titles, Indian-language editions, and original Indian series.

We are looking for a Commissioning Editor who can take complete ownership of a book—from scouting and acquisition to developmental editing, localisation, production coordination, and final print-ready files.

Key Responsibilities

- Scout and evaluate Children’s & YA titles for the Indian market.
- Build acquisition pipelines and prepare title-level P&Ls.;
- Negotiate licensing terms, royalties, territories, formats, and rights.
- Manage relationships with foreign publishers, agents, authors, and illustrators.
- Developmentally edit manuscripts for structure, pacing, character, tone, and readability.
- Guide authors and translators through revision rounds.
- Ensure age-appropriateness, cultural relevance, and sensitivity for Indian readers.
- Manage translations and localisation across Hindi and other Indian languages.
- Brief designers, illustrators, copy-editors, and proofreaders.




- Own schedules from contract signing to print-ready PDF.
- Coordinate approvals, metadata, ISBN, production, and final proofs.
- Prepare title packs for marketing and sales.

What We’re Looking For

- Strong experience in trade publishing, preferably Children’s or YA.
- Hands-on developmental editing experience.
- Experience in acquisitions, licensing, or foreign rights.
- Working knowledge of advances, royalties, territory, term, sub-rights, and reversion.
- Excellent English and strong Hindi reading/editing skills.
- Ability to manage multiple books, freelancers, and deadlines.
- Strong commercial judgement around pricing, print runs, readership, and market fit.

Good to Have

- Existing contacts with international publishers or agents.
- Experience with Frankfurt, Bologna, or New Delhi World Book Fair.
- Experience managing Indian-language translations.
- Understanding of school and educational distribution in India.
