Assistant Professor — History (Ancient Indian History) | BITE, Babatpur, Varanasi | Full-time, on campus | MA 55% + UGC NET (History) or PhD

Banaras Institute of Teacher's Education (BITE) , run by Purwanchal Educational Trust, has taught at Babatpur, near Varanasi airport, since 2003. Our BA (480 seats, fifteen subjects, MGKVP's NEP-2020 scheme) sits on a 23-year-old campus of 17 programmes and 5,000+ alumni. We are appointing one Assistant Professor in History as the department's second member. Teaching is at BA level: BITE offers History as a major and minor.

THE MANDATE The Trust is strengthening History teaching around four goals:

- Teach the MGKVP BA's Ancient Indian History papers — Early Civilizations, Political History of India, State, Economy & Society, Religion & Philosophy.
- Turn the Coins & Scripts project into a hands-on exercise in reading coin legends and scripts, and help us build a small teaching collection for it.
- Use Varanasi as a classroom: field visits to Sarnath and Varanasi's heritage zones, with documentation projects.
- Prepare students for MA entrance and competitive examinations, and help run heritage and communication activities.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Core

- Teach the BA's ancient Indian history papers (MGKVP's Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology syllabus), in English and Hindi as the class needs.
- Supervise the Coins & Scripts project and student field documentation.
- Mentor students towards MA study and competitive examinations.

One lead role, allocated by the Principal:
- Heritage fieldwork and documentation coordinator (Sarnath and Varanasi's heritage zones); or
- Co-curricular lead for heritage and communication activities (exhibitions, debates, awareness events).

WHAT YOU MUST HAVE





Under the UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers, 2018, clause 4.1(I):

- A Master's degree with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) in History or in Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology (50% for candidates eligible for relaxation under clause 3.4).
- UGC NET in History, or a SET valid in Uttar Pradesh, or a PhD awarded under the UGC PhD Regulations 2009 or 2016.

BITE's own requirements

- A PhD in either subject is preferred. A promising candidate without a PhD will be considered — for them, UGC NET in History is mandatory.
- Three years or more of teaching at UG or PG level in a recognised college or university. Time spent solely on a PhD does not count; teaching held alongside a PhD without leave does (clause 3.11).
- Fluent spoken and written English and Hindi. Fluency in English is a must.

WHAT WILL SET YOU APART

- Work in epigraphy, numismatics, archaeology or art history.
- Experience running student field visits, museum documentation or heritage projects.
- A record of students progressing to MA or clearing competitive examinations.
- Expertise in communication and soft-skills training.
- Academic-administration experience — coordinator, examination or IQAC roles.

VARANASI CONNECTION

Candidates based in Varanasi or the neighbouring districts, or with roots in this region (hometown, family, or studied at BHU, MGKVP or another institution here),



are especially encouraged to apply; candidates willing to relocate to Varanasi are welcome. All qualified candidates are considered.

WHAT WE OFFER

- Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience — pay is not a constraint for the right candidate; paid twelve months a year. Regular appointment (not a session-wise or fixed-term contract) with a six-month (one-semester) probation.
- BITE submits every faculty appointment to MGKVP for approval under Section 31 of the Uttar Pradesh State Universities Act, 1973, and gives you a copy of the approval.
- 50 hours of career development a year, counted.
- Work with a visible result: BA students who can read a coin legend and document a site.

SELECTION

1. A phone conversation in English and Hindi.
2. An online interview (video) for shortlisted candidates, so nobody travels for a first round; it may include a short online teaching demonstration.

3. One visit to the Babatpur campus: a 20-minute demo lecture on a set topic to students, followed the same day by the Selection Committee interview constituted under Section 31 of the UP State Universities Act, 1973, with experts nominated by the Vice-Chancellor of MGKVP.

4. The Committee's recommendation goes to the Vice-Chancellor for approval.
