Assistant Professor — Geography | BITE, Babatpur, Varanasi | Full-time, on campus | MA/M.Sc Geography 55% + UGC NET (Geography) or PhD

Banaras Institute of Teacher's Education (BITE), run by Purwanchal Educational Trust, has taught at Babatpur, near Varanasi airport, since 2003. Geography runs across our MGKVP-affiliated programmes: a BA subject, the 30-seat MA Geography (Ganga-basin fieldwork, GIS, NET/JRF preparation, dissertation) and the PG Diploma in Remote Sensing & GIS (60 seats; MGKVP-approved 2025), mentored by Prof. V.

C. Jha — former Director, NATMO; ex-ISRO/NRSC. A 23-year-old campus of 17 programmes and 5,000+ alumni. We are appointing one Assistant Professor in Geography, the department's third faculty member.

THE MANDATE The Trust is strengthening Geography around four goals:

- Teach physical, human and regional geography across the BA and MA.
- Make GIS and remote-sensing teaching (Basics of Remote Sensing; Geo-informatics & GIS Applications; Practical and Surveying) genuinely hands-on.
- Keep Ganga-basin fieldwork — floodplain, Vindhyan ranges, urban Varanasi, rural Babatpur — central.
- Run structured NET/JRF preparation for MA students.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Core

- Teach BA papers (Physical, Human and Economic Geography, Workplace and Disaster Management, and practicals) and MA papers such as Geomorphology, Climatology and Geographical Thoughts.
- Run the GIS and remote-sensing practicals (for example with QGIS) in the GIS lab; the Map Room & Geography Survey Lab holds the survey instruments and maps.
- Teach in the PG Diploma in Remote Sensing & GIS, with guidance from its academic mentor, Prof. V. C. Jha (former Director, NATMO).
- Lead field studies and the MA study tour; supervise MA dissertations.

One lead role, allocated by the Principal:
- Fieldwork and study-tour coordinator; or




- NET/JRF preparation lead for MA students.

WHAT YOU MUST HAVE

Under UGC Regulations 2018 (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers), clause 4.1(I):

- MA or M.Sc. in Geography with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade (50% for candidates eligible for relaxation under clause 3.4).
- UGC NET in Geography (or a SET valid in Uttar Pradesh), or a PhD in Geography awarded under the UGC PhD Regulations 2009 or 2016.

BITE's own requirements

- A PhD in Geography is preferred. A promising candidate without a PhD will be considered — for them, UGC NET in Geography is mandatory.
- Three years or more of teaching at UG or PG level in a recognised college or university. Time spent solely on a PhD does not count; teaching held alongside one without leave does (clause 3.11).
- Fluent spoken and written English and Hindi. Fluency in English is a must.

WHAT WILL SET YOU APART

- GIS or remote-sensing practicals taught; field surveys or study tours led.
- Fieldwork-based publications or a dissertation in physical or regional geography.
- NET/JRF coaching record, or your own JRF.
- Expertise in communication and soft-skills training.
- Academic-administration experience — coordinator, examination or IQAC roles.

VARANASI CONNECTION

Candidates based in Varanasi or the neighbouring districts, or with roots in this region (hometown, family, or studied at BHU, MGKVP or another institution here), are especially encouraged to apply; candidates willing to relocate to Varanasi are welcome.

WHAT WE OFFER

- Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience — pay is not a constraint for the right candidate; paid twelve months a year. Regular appointment (not a session-wise or fixed-term contract) with a six-month (one-semester) probation.
- BITE submits every faculty appointment to MGKVP for approval under Section 31 of the Uttar Pradesh State Universities Act, 1973, and gives you a copy of the approval.
- 50 hours of professional development a year, counted.

- An online interview (video) for shortlisted candidates, so nobody travels for a first round; it may include a short online teaching demonstration.
- One visit to the Babatpur campus: a 20-minute demo lecture on a set topic to students, followed the same day by the Selection Committee interview constituted under Section 31 of the UP State Universities Act, 1973, with experts nominated by the Vice-Chancellor of MGKVP.
- The Committee's recommendation goes to the Vice-Chancellor for approval.
