OPPORTUNITIES
Android Application Engineer
Connectivity and Audio
Suggested experience
4+ years of Android development.
Project allocation: May begin part-time during hardware feasibility; full-time during integration as host interfaces stabilize.
About the project
We are developing an Android-based communication system for sensor and control messages and audio over Wi-Fi HaLow and DECT NR+. The project combines radio hardware, embedded firmware and Android software to support controlled radio switching and reliable recovery. The phone platform and host interfaces will be confirmed through feasibility and hardware validation.
Your role
Extend the existing Android reference application into a reliable user experience for control and audio across selectable HaLow and NR+
transports.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and extend the shared Java application; use Kotlin where appropriate to the agreed architecture.
- Implement transport adapters behind a shared application interface, coordinating radio selection through the platform controller.
- Support explicit network/socket binding or the selected Nordic host interface without unintended fallback.
- Implement microphone capture, packetization, bounded buffering and automatic recovery after a radio transition.
- Define pending-command behavior with request IDs, expiry, deduplication/reconciliation and transparent status reporting.
- Handle permission denial, device disconnects, activity lifecycle changes and interrupted transitions.
- Add IPv6 or other transport support where required by the chosen NR+ integration.
- Integrate native C/C++ transport or audio libraries through the Android NDK and JNI where needed, with clear ownership of buffers, threads and resource lifetimes.
- Maintain Gradle/CMake native builds and troubleshoot native crashes, ABI compatibility and library packaging.
Required skills
- Java/Kotlin, Android lifecycle, permissions, concurrency and Gradle.
- Hands-on Android NDK, JNI and C/C++ development, including native memory management, threading and debugging.
- CMake, Gradle native integration, Clang/LLVM cross-compilation and Android ABI/shared-library packaging.
- Working knowledge of GCC toolchains and GNU Make builds for existing native and embedded codebases.
- Android networking, sockets and network selection.
- AudioRecord, PCM data handling and resource cleanup.
- State-driven UI and asynchronous error handling.
- Device-level debugging using adb, logcat and network diagnostics.
Preferred skills
- USB host/serial integration, IPv6 and communication with embedded accessories.
- Codec integration, jitter buffering and real-time audio troubleshooting.
- Experience maintaining ndk-build projects using Android.mk and Application.mk.
GCC knowledge supports work with existing native and embedded codebases; Android NDK builds use the applicable Clang/LLVM toolchain. Expected outcomes A shared application that supports both transports, resumes automatically after switching, avoids duplicate control execution through agreed protocol semantics, and clearly reports connection and audio state.
