Boiler & Wastewater Operator – Roles & Responsibilities
Position: Boiler & Wastewater Operator
Department: Utilities / Production
Reports To: Plant / Production Manager
1. Boiler Operation
- Operate the boiler safely and efficiently as per SOP.
- Monitor boiler steam pressure, temperature, water level and operating conditions.
- Maintain required steam pressure as per production requirement.
- Start and shut down the boiler according to the approved procedure.
- Monitor fuel feeding and ensure continuous, uniform fuel supply.
- Check furnace combustion and maintain proper firing conditions.
- Monitor ID fan, FD fan, pumps, dampers and other boiler auxiliaries.
- Check boiler feed-water supply and maintain proper water level.
2. Fuel & Combustion Management
- Ensure proper feeding of approved boiler fuel.
- Monitor fuel quality and moisture condition.
- Prevent excessive smoke and incomplete combustion.
- Monitor ash generation and arrange timely removal.
- Maintain proper air/fuel ratio as instructed.
- Report abnormal combustion, clinker formation or excessive ash immediately.
3. Boiler Water & Chemical Treatment
- Monitor boiler feed-water and chemical dosing.
- Check water parameters such as pH, TDS, hardness and other parameters specified by the plant/QC.
- Carry out blowdown as per operating requirements.
- Maintain proper water level and avoid low-water conditions.
- Maintain records of water-treatment activities and chemical consumption.
4. APCD / Pollution-Control Equipment
- Operate and monitor connected pollution-control equipment.
- Check cyclone, scrubber, ESP/WESP/bag filter, ID fan and associated ducts, as applicable.
- Monitor scrubber water circulation and levels.
- Check for abnormal pressure drop, leakage or choking.
- Ensure ash and sludge are removed regularly.
- Immediately report abnormal emissions, excessive dust/smoke or APCD malfunction.
5. Wastewater Treatment Operation
- Operate the wastewater treatment system as per SOP.
- Monitor wastewater flow and tank levels.
- Operate pumps, agitators, dosing systems, filters and other treatment equipment.
- Maintain correct chemical dosing as instructed.
- Monitor parameters such as pH, TDS, COD/BOD, conductivity or other plant-specified parameters.
- Collect samples and coordinate with QC/laboratory for testing.
- Ensure treated water is transferred/discharged/reused only as authorized by the plant procedure.
6. Sludge & Waste Handling
- Monitor sludge generation from the wastewater treatment system.
- Operate sludge pumps/dewatering equipment where provided.
- Arrange proper collection and disposal of sludge.
- Keep sludge-handling areas clean.
- Maintain records of sludge generation and disposal.
7. Equipment Inspection
Regularly check:
- Boiler feed pumps
- Fuel feeding system
- ID/FD fans
- Boiler water level
- Steam pressure
- Feed-water tank
- Blowdown system
- Chemical dosing pumps
- ETP/WTP pumps
- Agitators
- Filter systems
- Valves and pipelines
- Motors and electrical panels
- Scrubber/APCD equipment
Report leakage,
abnormal vibration, noise, overheating or equipment failure immediately.
8. Safety
- Follow all boiler and wastewater plant safety procedures.
- Wear required PPE.
- Never bypass safety interlocks.
- Follow proper isolation/LOTO procedures before maintenance.
- Take special care while handling treatment chemicals.
- Maintain safe distance from hot steam lines, boiler surfaces and pressurized equipment.
- Immediately report leaks, unsafe conditions, fire hazards and near misses.
9. Shift Logbook & Records
Maintain the shift logbook containing:
- Boiler start/stop time
- Steam pressure
- Feed-water parameters
- Fuel consumption
- Blowdown details
- Chemical consumption
- APCD operating condition
- Wastewater quantity
- pH/TDS and other tested parameters
- Sludge generation
- Pump/equipment running hours
- Breakdowns and abnormalities
- Shift handover observations
10. Coordination
- Coordinate with production, maintenance, QC/laboratory and ETP/MEE operators.
- Coordinate steam requirements with production.
- Inform maintenance immediately about equipment problems.
- Coordinate with QC for water and wastewater testing.
- Properly hand over boiler, APCD and wastewater plant status to the next shift operator.
Key Responsibility
The Boiler & Wastewater Operator is responsible for safe and continuous boiler operation, productive fuel and steam management, proper operation of pollution-control equipment and wastewater treatment systems, compliance with plant operating procedures, and accurate shift documentation.
Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹40,000.00 per month
