BOQ Engineer / Quantity Surveyor – Construction & Interior Design

Job Purpose:

To accurately prepare detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQ) from AutoCAD or Revit drawings for construction and interior design projects, enabling transparent cost estimation, tendering, and budgeting.

Key Responsibilities:

- Review and Interpretation of Drawings
- Analyze architectural, structural, and MEP drawings in AutoCAD/Revit.
- Verify dimensions, scales, annotations, and cross-reference multiple drawing sets to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Interpret interior design details including finishes, furniture layouts, fixtures, and fittings.
- Quantity Take-Off (QTO)
- Measure and extract quantities of materials, labor, and equipment from digital drawings.
- Use software-assisted take-off tools or Excel-based templates for automated calculations.
- Ensure proper unit application (e.g., m³, m², nos., kg) for each work item.
- BOQ Preparation
- Create itemized descriptions covering material, labor, plant, and accessories necessary for project execution.
- Structure BOQ section-wise (substructure, superstructure, finishes, MEP, furniture & fittings) following Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
- Incorporate preliminaries, general items, contingency sums, and risk allowances.
- Rate Application
- Apply rates (from DSR, market rates, or project-specific schedules) to each quantity for total cost estimation.




- Account for contractor overheads, profit margins, transportation, and installation costs.
- Cost Compilation and Documentation
- Compile BOQ into a tabulated format with: Item No., Description, Unit, Quantity, Rate, Total Amount.
- Prepare the abstract of cost with section totals and final project cost including GST or taxes.
- Ensure the BOQ aligns with tendering and procurement requirements.
- Coordination and Communication
- Collaborate with architects, interior designers, engineers, and project managers to clarify design specifications and changes.
- Liaise with suppliers for accurate pricing and material specifications.
- Assist in tender evaluation or pre-bid clarifications as needed.
- Quality Assurance
- Cross-check measurements, unit consistency, and formulas in Excel or BOQ software to minimize human or system errors.
- Keep an audit trail linking each BOQ item to the corresponding drawing or specification.

Skills and Qualifications:

- Education: Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Interior Design, Quantity Surveying, or related field.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar CAD tools; MS Excel/Google Sheets (formula-linked templates preferred); knowledge of BOQ software tools is an advantage.
- Knowledge: RICS NRM, SMM,



or CESMM measurement standards; understanding of construction and interior design processes.
- Soft Skills: Attention to detail, analytical mindset, teamwork, communication, and time management.

Experience:

- 2–5 years in quantity surveying, BOQ preparation, or estimating for construction and interior design projects.
- Practical experience in site visits and verification of drawings for accurate quantity assessment is preferred.

Deliverables:

- Complete, accurate BOQ documents aligned with AutoCAD/Revit drawings.
- Abstract of project cost ready for client review or tender submission.
- Supporting documentation linking quantities to drawings and specifications.

- On-Screen Take-Off (OST) software
- BIM quantity extraction tools
- Formula-linked Excel BOQ templates
