Mechanical Design Engineer – Special Purpose Machines (SPM)

1. Job Purpose

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer with 2–5 years of hands-on experience in designing Special Purpose Machines (SPMs), automation equipment and production machines.

The candidate will be responsible for mechanical concept development, 3D modelling, detailed engineering, component selection, fabrication drawings, assembly support and machine commissioning.

2. Key Responsibilities

SPM & Automation Machine Design

- Design and develop Special Purpose Machines based on customer requirements.
- Develop machine concepts, mechanisms, layouts and automation sequences in coordination with the automation team.
- Design mechanisms for assembly, pick & place, pressing, screwing, feeding, inspection, testing and material handling applications.
- Develop pneumatic, servo-driven and mechanically actuated mechanisms.
- Design machine structures, frames, tooling, fixtures, slides, grippers and work-holding systems.
- Optimize designs for reliability, manufacturability, cycle time and cost.

3D Modelling & Detailed Design

- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
- Prepare part drawings with appropriate dimensions, tolerances, fits and GD&T.;
- Prepare BOMs and maintain design documentation.
- Select standard components such as bearings, linear guides, ball screws, actuators, pneumatic cylinders, couplings, gears, belts and sensors.
- Design sheet-metal parts, fabricated structures, machine guards and enclosures.

Engineering & Integration

- Work closely with Electrical, PLC, Robotics and Vision teams during machine development.
- Design mechanisms for integration of SCARA/6-axis robots, machine vision, screwdrivers, feeders, conveyors and pneumatic systems.
- Calculate and select motors, gearboxes, actuators and transmission components.
- Perform basic calculations for load, torque, speed, strength, stiffness and cycle time.




- Ensure machine designs meet functional and safety requirements.

Manufacturing & Assembly Support

- Coordinate with fabrication, machining and assembly teams.
- Review manufactured components and resolve design-related issues.
- Support machine assembly, debugging and trial runs.
- Modify designs based on assembly and commissioning feedback.
- Participate in FAT, SAT and customer-site commissioning when required.

3. Required Technical Skills

- Strong knowledge of SPM and industrial automation machine design.
- Good understanding of mechanical mechanisms and machine elements.
- Proficiency in at least one 3D CAD software such as:
- SolidWorks
- Creo
- Inventor
- Solid Edge
- Good knowledge of AutoCAD for 2D drawings.
- Understanding of GD&T;, fits, tolerances and surface finishes.
- Knowledge of machining, fabrication, sheet-metal and manufacturing processes.
- Good understanding of pneumatic systems and component selection.
- Basic understanding of servo motors, linear actuators and automation systems.
- Ability to prepare accurate BOMs and manufacturing drawings.

4. Preferred Experience

Candidates with experience in the following areas will be preferred:

- SPM design and machine building
- Automated assembly machines
- Pick-and-place machines
- Screwdriving / fastening machines
- Pressing and riveting machines
- Conveyor and material-handling systems
- Inspection and testing machines
- Robotic automation
- Machine vision integration
- Pneumatic automation
- Jigs, fixtures and tooling
- Cycle-time optimization

5. Qualification

Education:
B.E./B.Tech/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or related discipline.

Experience:
2–5 years of relevant experience in SPM design, industrial automation, machine building or special-purpose machinery.

Candidates should have demonstrable hands-on experience in taking a machine from concept → 3D design → detailed drawings → manufacturing → assembly → commissioning.

Pay: ₹300,000.00 - ₹750,000.00 per year
