Roles and Responsibilities:

- Sit with students of Std 5 to 9 in Marathi-medium and semi-English schools and find out what they actually understand, not what their marks say. Trace a wrong answer back to the earlier concept that is missing.
- Conduct interviews in Marathi with students, teachers, headmasters and parents, using our discussion guides, and use your own judgement on what to ask next.
- Visit the same schools repeatedly, so that teachers and headmasters speak to you openly rather than giving first-visit answers.
- Run early first-reaction sessions with small groups of students on our prototype learning material, and record what actually happened, including the parts that did not work.
- Write structured reports in English that separate what you saw from what you conclude, and that report findings going against what we hoped to hear.
- Check students' prerequisite gaps against our internal concept mapping, and tell us where the mapping is wrong.
- Build and maintain the school database: contacts, permissions, visit history and field notes.
- Obtain written parental consent before every interaction with a student, without exception.
- Research other education technology platforms working in Maharashtra: what they promise, and what students actually receive.
- Approache to Balbharati, SCERT, municipal and district education departments and corporate CSR teams, identifying the right officers, arranging meetings, preparing briefing notes and following up.

Preferred candidate profile





- 2 or more years teaching Science or Mathematics to Std 5 to 9, in a Marathi-medium, semi-English or English-medium school. Teaching in a coaching class or tuition centre counts fully.
- Graduate or postgraduate in Science, Mathematics or Education. B.Ed, D.El.Ed or M.Ed preferred, not mandatory.
- Fluent Marathi, spoken and written. Most of your interviews will be with people who speak no English.
- Able to communicate well, write explicit, structured reports in English. You will be asked to write about 200 words in English as part of selection, so please apply only if you are comfortable doing that.
- Willing to travel regularly to schools across Pune city and district, and occasionally elsewhere in Maharashtra, working on your own.
- Able to build rapport quickly with a headmaster, a teacher, a parent and a fourteen-year-old, in that order of difficulty.
- Based in Pune or willing to relocate.

Counts in your favour, not required

- Experience of any field survey or household survey work, including ASER or Pratham surveys.
- Remedial or bridge teaching, or work with students who are behind their class.
- Teaching in a municipal, Zilla Parishad or aided school, or with an education NGO such as Pratham, Teach for India, Akanksha or Lend A Hand India.
- Familiarity with Balbharati textbooks and the semi-English system.
- Two-wheeler and valid driving licence. Conveyance is reimbursed either way.
