Designation: Senior Research Scientist-Hydrogen Technology Materials

Roles & Responsibilities
- Consult with internal stakeholders (OPCO & DIIC) to define the scope of research projects
- Collaborate with external partners, SMEs, OPCO stakeholders, and internal engineering teams to identify viable and high-potential solutions
- Identify the infrastructure required for each project and ensure its availability—internally or externally—based on economic viability and usability
- Lead and manage R&D; projects from concept through to deliverables; define milestones, allocate resources, and ensure timely delivery within scope and budget
- Identify emerging trends in materials science and hydrogen technologies; propose novel research directions and contribute to the organisation's IP portfolio
- Hands-on experience in the following areas is essential:
- Alloy Development for Hydrogen Applications: Design, develop, and evaluate metallic alloys for hydrogen storage, transport, and infrastructure; assess hydrogen compatibility, embrittlement resistance, and long-term performance
- Coatings Development & Optimization: Develop and optimize protective and functional coatings using PVD, thermal spray,
and electroless plating; tailor coating architectures for hydrogen barrier performance, corrosion resistance, and mechanical durability
- Materials & Coatings Characterization: Plan and execute comprehensive characterization—Optical Microscopy, XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, TGA, DSC—and testing including mechanical evaluation, hydrogen embrittlement, permeation studies, hardness, toughness, bond/adhesion strength, and wear resistance
- Data Interpretation & Reporting: Critically analyze and interpret complex test results; prepare clear, concise technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
Must have Skills
- Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline (mandatory)
- Minimum 5 years of post-Ph.D. industrial R&D; experience in metallurgy, materials science, or coatings technology
- Demonstrated experience in alloy development and testing for hydrogen applications, including hydrogen embrittlement assessment, permeation studies, and compatibility evaluation
- Strong background in physical metallurgy, including phase transformations, microstructural evolution, coatings development and evaluation, and structure–property correlation
Applied Research & Project Execution Skills
- Proven track record of executing applied research projects with hands-on experience in research methodologies
- Proficient in the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) process and set-based concurrent engineering with trade-off analysis
- Ability to conduct thorough literature surveys, synthesize findings, and derive actionable inferences to advance project objectives
- Skilled at identifying risks early and developing effective mitigation plans
