Senior role is responsible for overseeing the entire nephrology department, ensuring high standards of patient care, and aligning the department's goals with the overall mission of the healthcare institution.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Clinical Leadership &
• Patient Care:
- Provide expert diagnosis and treatment for complex acute and chronic kidney diseases, hypertension, and electrolyte disorders.
- Oversee comprehensive dialysis services (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and lead renal transplant programs, including pre- and post-transplant care.
- Supervise and, if necessary, perform specialized procedures like renal biopsies and dialysis catheter insertions.
- Ensure a patient-centric approach with an emphasis on empathy and ethical practice, counseling patients and families on treatment options and prognosis.
- Departmental Management &
• Strategy:
- Lead and manage the nephrology department, ensuring its operations align with the hospital's strategic goals and mission.
- Develop, implement, and monitor departmental policies, clinical protocols, and care pathways to ensure standardized best practices.
- Manage budgets, resources, and expenditures to ensure operational efficiency and financial accountability.
- Quality Improvement &
• Compliance:
- Monitor clinical outcomes, safety protocols, and lead continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.
- Ensure strict compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., NABH/JCI, federal regulations).
- Education, Research &
• Mentorship:
- Mentor, supervise,
and evaluate medical staff, including consultants, residents, and nursing teams.
- Promote and participate in clinical research, academic activities, and publications.
- Conduct or oversee educational sessions, seminars, and workshops for knowledge sharing and ongoing professional development.
- Collaboration &
• Communication:
- Work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including urology, cardiology, critical care, and endocrinology, to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the nephrology department, hospital administration, and external partners (e.g., BC Renal programs, primary care physicians).
Key Qualifications and Skills
- Education:
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
- Completion of an accredited residency program in Internal Medicine.
- Board certification in Nephrology.
- Active medical license.
- Experience:
- Significant clinical experience in nephrology (typically 15+ years), with a proven track record of excellence in patient care.
- Prior experience in a leadership or medical director role within a clinical setting is often required.
- Skills:
- Exceptional leadership and team management abilities.
- Solid strategic thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an empathetic approach to patient and family interactions.
- Research and academic orientation.
