The first quality we are looking for is opinion backed by evidence. A data architect who agrees with the last person in the room is worse than no architect at all, because the customer will make an expensive decision believing it was reviewed. We want someone who will say that a proposed approach will not scale, explain precisely why, and offer the alternative in the same breath.

The second is translation. Most of the people whose approval you need cannot read an architecture diagram, and most of the engineers who will build your design cannot read a business case. You will spend your week moving between those two audiences. Whether you can hold the attention of a CFO for ten minutes and then walk a Spark developer through a partitioning decision is the practical test of this role.

The third is commercial awareness. Every design choice you make has a consumption cost the customer pays monthly and an effort cost we absorb inside a fixed price. An architect who optimises only for elegance will lose us money quietly for a year. We want someone who reaches for the simplest architecture that meets the requirement and can say plainly what it will cost to run.
