Role Summary:
The Engineering Manager owns technical outcomes and delivery for backend engineering teams building and operating enterprise applications at Tenerity India. Quality is primary engineering ownership—not a handoff to a separate QA organization: you define quality bars, testing strategy, automation, and release readiness criteria with your teams and hold engineering accountable for outcomes in production. You translate business and product priorities into executable engineering plans, align execution with security and compliance expectations, and partner closely with Product Management and Security so releases are predictable, observable, and defensible.
You are accountable for architecture coherence, operational posture, and raising the bar for engineering excellence while growing Associate Architects, Architects, and senior individual contributors. You will operate at the intersection of hands-on engineering, multi-team leadership, and cross-functional alignment: clarifying tradeoffs, de-risking complex initiatives, and ensuring security and compliance expectations are reflected in how we design, build, test, and ship software. We expect a leader who remains technically engaged—contributing to architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical decisions—while managing multiple teams, applications, and concurrent projects. Domain Expertise:
Payment & Subscription Billing We are looking for a leader with deep expertise in the Payment and Subscription Billing domain. This role requires hands-on experience building, scaling, and operating billing systems that handle recurring revenue, complex pricing models, and payment processing at scale.
Required Domain Experience
- Subscription Lifecycle Management: Design and implement end-to-end subscription workflows including sign-up, trial periods, upgrades/downgrades, renewals, cancellations, and reactivations.
- Recurring Billing Systems: Build and operate systems handling automated recurring charges, prorated billing, usage-based billing, and metered pricing models
- Payment Gateway Integration: Hands-on experience integrating with payment processors (Stripe, Braintree, Adyen, PayPal, or similar) including tokenization, PCI compliance, and multi-currency support
- Dunning & Revenue Recovery: Implement intelligent retry logic, dunning workflows, and churn prevention mechanisms for failed payments Page 1 of 6
Domain-Specific Technical Knowledge
- PCI-DSS Compliance: Understanding of PCI requirements for handling cardholder data
- Payment Security: Tokenization strategies, 3D Secure (3DS2) implementation, fraud detection, and chargeback management
Key Responsibilities: People Management & Team Development
- Manage multiple engineering teams and applications while understanding individual team members' aspirations, skill sets, and career goals
- Leverage diverse backgrounds and abilities to align with business vision and organizational success
- Develop effective communication, leadership, and mentoring skills to drive team performance
- Conduct monthly 1:1s with direct reportees and document feedback as necessary
- Build high-performing engineering teams through strategic hiring, retention, and development
- Ensure compliance with internal and mandatory training requirements across teams
Multi-Team & Project Leadership
- Lead multiple engineering teams and concurrent initiatives; prioritize and remove systemic blockers so delivery stays predictable without constant executive intervention
- Coordinate across different teams and manage multiple concurrent projects simultaneously
- Take accountability for various applications, strategic decisions, and innovation initiatives within assigned domain
- Own delivery practices: planning rhythms, execution hygiene, quality gates, and predictability across teams
- Improve estimation, dependency management, and cross-team coordination
Architecture & Technical Direction
- Own and communicate system architecture across teams (diagrams, ADRs, standards)
- Lead architecture and design reviews; maintain living documentation and technical standards
- Guide teams on microservices architecture, service boundaries, and domain-driven design principles
- Design scalable, resilient, and maintainable systems serving multiple clients across multiple countries
- Identify technical debt, quantify risk and cost, align prioritization with Product and business, and drive mitigation plans with measurable progress
- Mentor Associate Backend Architects and Backend Architects on architecture patterns and design decisions
Technology Stack Expertise
- Backend Development: Guide teams on Java (Spring Boot, Spring Framework) and Python (FastAPI, Django, Flask) development

- Optimize cloud costs through right-sizing, reserved instances, and resource optimization
- Establish infrastructure as code practices using Terraform or AWS CDK
- Design CI/CD pipelines for cloud-native deployments (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline)
Engineering-Owned Quality
- Own end-to-end quality for the domain—test strategy across phases (unit, integration, contract, E2E where appropriate)
- Drive shift-left practices, meaningful automation, flaky-test hygiene, and clear "definition of done" for release readiness
- Establish comprehensive testing strategies using JUnit (Java), pytest (Python), and TestContainers
- Maintain high standards using code quality tools (SonarQube, Checkstyle, pylint)
- Drive systematic defect reduction and post-release quality metrics without depending on a separate QA department as the primary owner Page 3 of 6
Deployment & Release Engineering
- Partner with teams on safe rollout patterns, observability, rollback posture, and progressive delivery
- Implement deployment strategies (Blue/Green, Canary) and educate teams on best practices
- Ensure practices are understood and followed in production systems
- Lead or support major incidents with strong troubleshooting and analytical discipline
- Drive root-cause analysis and durable remediation
Security & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements:
- GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) for European users
- CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) for California residents
- SOC 2 compliance for security, availability, and confidentiality
- Champion secure SDLC practices (threat modeling, patching, secrets management, IAM patterns)
- Design security architecture, practices, and governance
- Implement risk mitigation strategies across managed applications and teams
AI-Native Engineering Practices
- Lead AI adoption strategy for engineering: tooling, training, governance, and metrics tied to delivery and quality outcomes
- Drive adoption of AI coding assistants (Cursor IDE, Amazon Q) across backend engineering teams
- Establish best practices and guidelines for AI-assisted development
- Design workflows integrating AI tools into the development lifecycle
- Establish AI-native engineering practices (review, testing, security, observability) so AI assisted work meets the same production bar as traditional development
- Drive safe use of agentic workflows (orchestrated agents/tools) with clear guardrails, approvals, and operational controls
- Champion an AI-first approach to problem solving: faster exploration and iteration grounded in verification, cost awareness, and responsible use of data and models
- Measure and optimize team productivity improvements from AI tools
- Partner with platform, security, and legal to align vendor/model choices, data handling, and compliance with organizational risk appetite
Required Qualifications
- 10-15+ years of professional experience building and operating software with contemporary technology stacks, spanning Java (Spring Boot, Spring Framework) and/or Python (FastAPI, Django, Flask)
