We are looking for a versatile, craft-oriented writer who treats writing as clear thinking made visible. At Goonj, work is collaborative and fluid—we value people who take complete ownership of their craft while remaining ready to roll up their sleeves and adapt to organizational priorities, on-ground campaigns, and disaster relief mobilisations.
Core Responsibilities
- Impact Storytelling & Ground Narratives:
- Turn raw field notes, audio interviews, and regional team updates into compelling case studies that center community dignity, local problem-solving, and systemic learning.
- Follow up with ground teams to verify details, understand human context, and secure proper consent and safeguarding documentation.
- Maintain an accessible, organized archive of verified stories, quotes, and visual assets for organizational use.
- Editorial Support for Flagship Publications:
- Draft assigned sections, thematic spotlights, and case profiles for the Annual Report and programmatic publications under the guidance of senior editorial leadership.
- Collaborate with programme and M&E; teams to cross-verify numbers, dates, and locations, translating data into clear, human-centered narratives.
- Fact-check and proofread publication drafts across multi-team contributors.
- Campaigns, Digital & External Collateral:
- Write copy for seasonal drives (e.g., Rahat, winter drives), newsletters, donor briefs, website updates, and press notes.
- Translate core narratives into engaging, channel-appropriate short-form copy (including emailers and social media posts) that avoids transactional NGO jargon and pity-based appeals.
- Work closely with design and other teammates to ensure text and visuals reinforce each other seamlessly.
- AI, Quality & Linguistic Integrity:
- Use AI tools pragmatically for research, outlining, and transcription, while ensuring voice, critical judgment, fact-checking, and final authorship remain entirely your own.
- Identify and edit out generic, flattened language, aligning all copy with Goonj’s authentic voice.
- Adaptive Organizational Support
- Actively participate in all-hands campaigns, ground-level collection drives, relief operations, or events where cross-functional teamwork and quick communication turnaround are required.
How We Work at Goonj
- Shared Ownership Over Rigid Silos: While writing is your primary anchor, we operate as a community. You will often brainstorm across teams, help field colleagues frame their ideas, and step in where needed during key organizational moments.
- Thought Before Text: We value understanding an issue over rushing to publish. You are encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and interrogate briefs before writing.
- Walking the Talk: The way we work is as key as what we produce. How you interact with colleagues, listen to field members, and treat organizational resources reflects the dignity at the core of our philosophy.
Qualifications & Qualities
- Experience: 2–4 years of relevant writing/editorial experience in journalism, non-profit communications, publishing, or research-led storytelling.
- Bilingual Facility: Strong written English with the working ability to read, listen to, and transcribe conversations and field notes in Hindi (or other Indian regional languages).
- Nuanced Communicator: An instinct for human-centered storytelling that avoids sensationalism, victim narratives, and corporate jargon.
- Adaptable & Grounded: Comfortable navigating changing priorities, field realities, and lean team dynamics with humility and initiative.
