The Opportunity

We are seeking Automation and Control Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team in the battery manufacturing industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, development, implementation and maintaining automation systems and control strategies to optimize manufacturing processes, improve efficiency, and ensure high-quality production of battery cells. This role requires a deep understanding of automation technologies, control systems, and manufacturing processes within the battery industry.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Automation Design & Engineering

- Lead and participate in automation design reviews with machine suppliers and OEMs.
- Review Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Sequences of Operations, Control Philosophies, and Network Architecture Documents.
- Define and enforce automation architecture standards across all equipment categories.
- Ensure all supplier-delivered automation systems comply with Agratas engineering standards.
- Develop reusable control strategies and templates that can be applied consistently across projects and facilities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of Agratas automation standards and engineering guidelines.

PLC Software Development

- Develop, modify, simulate, and troubleshoot PLC programs across multiple platforms.
- Configure machine sequences, interlocks, alarms, recipes, and machine state models.
- Support machine simulation and offline testing activities prior to equipment delivery.
- Review and audit supplier software to ensure compliance with Agratas coding standards.
- Work across Siemens TIA Portal, Mitsubishi GX Works, and Beckhoff TwinCAT platforms.

OPC UA & NodeSet Development

- Develop OPC UA Information Models aligned to the Agratas data architecture.




- Generate and validate OPC UA NodeSets for all automation equipment categories.
- Define telemetry structures, alarm hierarchies, and namespace structures.
- Review and validate supplier-generated NodeSets for structural and semantic correctness.
- Support vendor onboarding and alignment to Agratas standards.
- Maintain namespace governance and version control for all published NodeSets.

PLC–SCADA–MES Integration

- Define and document PLC–SCADA–MES interfaces, including data exchange specifications.
- Configure communication layers between PLC, SCADA, and MES systems.
- Develop telemetry, status, alarm, and production data structures for consumption by higher-level systems.
- Validate data mapping and end-to-end integration across all system layers.
- Support Ignition SCADA configuration and MES integration activities.

Functional Safety

- Support machine safety reviews, HAZOP activities, and risk assessments.
- Validate safety architecture during design review phases.
- Configure and troubleshoot safety PLCs and safety-rated networks.
- Validate safety functions (e-stops, safety interlocks, safe motion, STO) during FAT and site commissioning.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards including IEC 13849, IEC 61508, and ISO 10218.

FAT, SAT & Commissioning

- Author FAT and SAT protocols, IQ/OQ documentation, and commissioning plans.
- Execute FAT activities at supplier facilities, covering PLC logic, safety functions, alarms, OPC UA, SCADA interfaces, and robot interfaces.
- Lead SAT and IQ/OQ activities at manufacturing sites.
- Support installation, start-up, troubleshooting, and performance optimization during commissioning.
- Manage punch-list items and ensure timely closure of outstanding actions.

Supplier & Vendor Management

- Manage multiple equipment suppliers simultaneously across concurrent projects.
- Track technical actions,



design review deliverables, and supplier milestones.
- Review and approve supplier documentation: FDS, IO Lists, Tag Lists, Alarm Lists, Telemetry Lists, Node Sets, FAT Reports, and software backups.
- Ensure timely closure of design review actions and escalate risks as appropriate.
- Represent Agratas in supplier technical meetings and design reviews.

Documentation & Standards

- Develop and maintain Functional Design Specifications, Control Philosophies, and IO Lists.
- Author and manage Alarm Lists, Telemetry Lists, and Network Architecture Documents.
- Produce FAT/SAT Protocols, Commissioning Reports, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the Agratas Automation Standards Library.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

- 6+ years of experience in Automation & Control Systems engineering within a Li-Ion Battery Manufacturing or similar high-tech manufacturing workplace.
- Excellent proficiency in programming and testing PLC (Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1500), Mitsubishi GX Works (Q-Series / iQ-R), Beckhoff Twin CAT 3), Structured Text (ST) / Ladder / FBD
- Expertise in Ignition SCADA systems, HMI configuration, and information systems
- Knowledge of Industrial Cybersecurity, control network architecture, and communication protocols (Ethernet, EtherCAT, CC Link, Profibus, ProfNet, Modbus, OPC UA etc.)
- Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and excellent documentation skills
- Experience with advanced automation technologies such as robotics, AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles), and machine vision systems in manufacturing
- Ideally the ability to code in Phyton, visual basic and or C++

Role Specific Qualifications/Certifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Automation & Control Engineering, electrical engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field. Master’s degree or certifications in automation systems is a plus.
- Certification in Automation and Control Systems is highly desirable.
- Experience with advanced technologies such as vision systems, machine learning algorithms, or AI-powered automation is a plus.
- Knowledge of battery manufacturing processes or similar high-precision production environments is beneficial.
