Role & Responsibility
The Manager CAM owns the complete CAM function: converting approved CAD designs into accurate, machine-ready output (3D-printed resin/wax patterns) on time, at the right quality and at the lowest sustainable cost. The role is accountable for department-level delivery to production, machine capacity and utilisation, CAM-related quality, tooling and consumables cost, process standardisation and building a capable, multi-skilled team.
2. Key Responsibilities
2.1 Department Leadership & Capacity Planning
- Lead the CAM department and set daily, weekly and monthly output plans aligned to the PPC and order-delivery schedule.
- Plan machine and manpower capacity; flag capacity gaps early and propose shift, outsourcing or investment options.
- Allocate jobs across programmers and machines based on complexity, priority and skill; own the department's job-priority board.
- Establish clear information flow with CAD, PPC and production so that every job has a committed date, status and owner at all times.
2.2 Delivery & Production Support
- Own on-time delivery of CAM output to casting and production; track WIP and ageing jobs daily.
- Define and enforce turnaround-time (TAT) standards by job category (standard, complex, urgent, sample).
- Handle escalations and critical / priority orders; resolve bottlenecks within defined response times.
- Conduct daily production review with the team and a weekly performance review with the Production Head.
2.3 Quality & Accuracy
- Own first-time-right performance and CAM-attributable rejection and rework.
- Establish design-for-manufacturability (DFM) checks at the CAD CAM handover to catch issues before programming.
- Ensure weight and dimensional conformance of models against design; work with QC and Casting on root-cause analysis (RCA) and CAPA.
- Build first-piece approval and in-process checks for new and complex designs.
2.4 Machine,
Technology & Asset Management
- Maximise utilisation of CNC machines and 3D printers; monitor downtime, failed prints and machine-wise productivity.
- Drive preventive maintenance and calibration with the Maintenance team; minimise unplanned breakdowns.
- Evaluate and recommend current CAM software modules, machines, resins, cutters and automation; prepare cost-benefit justification for capex.
- Ensure licences, software updates and post-processors are current and controlled.
2.5 Tooling, Consumables & Cost Control
- Prepare and manage the department budget for tooling, resin, wax and consumables; track cost per unit of output.
- Standardise parameters, tool libraries and print settings to improve tool life and reduce wastage.
- Coordinate with Purchase on vendor evaluation, pricing and lead times for critical consumables.
2.6 Process Standardisation & New Product Development
- Create and maintain SOPs, standard machining strategies and template programs for recurring design families.
- Lead CAM input for NPD, samples and customer approvals; commit and deliver realistic timelines.
- Run a structured improvement programme (Kaizen, RCA, cycle-time studies) with measurable savings.
2.7 People Management
- Recruit, onboard, train and appraise team members; maintain a skill matrix and succession cover for every critical machine and software.
- Set individual KPIs for team members that cascade from the department scorecard in this JD.
- Build a culture of accountability, safety, discipline and continuous learning.
2.8 Documentation, MIS & Compliance
- Maintain a controlled program library with version control, revision history and traceability to design and order numbers.
- Publish monthly department MIS: output, OTD, TAT, FTR, rejection, utilisation, cost and wastage.
- Ensure compliance with company SOPs, EHS norms, machine safety, and internal and external audit requirements; close audit findings within timelines.
3. Decision Authority
- Job allocation, sequencing and priority within the CAM department (in line with PPC commitments).
- Machining strategy, parameters, tool selection and program release approval.
- Recommend hiring, training, performance ratings and incentive payouts for team members.
- Recommend purchase of tooling and consumables within approved budget; recommend capex for approval.
4. Required Skills & Competencies
Technical
- Expert-level CAM programming & Strong working knowledge for jewellery: Chituboax, B9 Creater, OneSlicer, Wax Jet printer, Materialise Magics, 3D Sprint 2025, PowerMill, Mastercam, WorkNC, RhinoCAM or equivalent.
- Strong working knowledge of 3D printing (resin/wax) set-up, orientation, supports and print-failure analysis.
- Understanding of the full jewellery process chain: CAD, CAM, casting, stone setting, finishing, polishing, and how CAM decisions affect metal weight and downstream yield.
- Tooling, cutting parameters, tolerances, surface finish and precious-metal machining.
Managerial
- Capacity planning, scheduling and production control; comfort with ERP / MES data and Excel-based MIS.
- Problem solving using RCA, 5-Why, Pareto and CAPA.
- Team leadership, coaching, conflict resolution and cross-functional coordination.
- Cost awareness, budgeting and data-driven decision making.
5. Educational Qualification
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production or Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Certification in CAD/CAM/CNC programming preferred; Lean / Six Sigma exposure an advantage.
6. Preferred Background
Gold / precious-metal jewellery manufacturing (strongly preferred), CNC jewellery manufacturing, precision engineering, tool & die, or high-precision CNC machining, with demonstrated team leadership.
