Position Overview
Vensure Employer Solutions is modernizing its reporting landscape by migrating from the legacy Izenda embedded reporting platform to a cloud-native reporting solution (Sigma / Report Center) built on a cloud data warehouse.
The Data Engineer
Reporting will play a central role in this transition: understanding how legacy Izenda reports are built, rebuilding and validating them on the new platform, and engineering the underlying data so that reporting is accurate, performant, and secure throughout the migration and beyond.
This is a hands-on, SQL-first role. The successful candidate will combine mandatory, deep SQL expertise with robust data engineering fundamentals, advanced Excel capability, and a practical understanding of how business reporting works end to end from requirement to data source to published report. Prior experience executing or supporting a BI/reporting platform migration is highly valued.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting Platform Transition & Migration
- Analyze and document existing Izenda reports data sources, joins, filters, calculated fields, and business logic to create a complete migration inventory.
- Rebuild legacy reports and dashboards on the new cloud reporting platform, preserving business logic while taking advantage of modern capabilities.
- Perform parity testing and reconciliation between legacy and new reports, documenting variances and driving them to resolution before cutover.
- Support phased rollout activities: pilot groups, cutover planning, parallel-run periods, and decommissioning of retired reports.
- Rationalize the report catalogue during migration consolidate duplicates, retire unused reports, and standardize naming, categories, and ownership.
- Configure access and report allocation on the new platform across user-, role-, and account-level hierarchies, and maintain audit trails of permission and report assignment changes.
- Prepare migration documentation, mapping sheets, release notes, and user-facing change communication to support a smooth transition.
SQL & Data Engineering (Mandatory Core)
- Write, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL multi-table joins, aggregations, subqueries, CTEs, window functions, views, and stored procedures.
- Build and maintain datasets, data models, views, and transformation logic that serve as the reporting layer for the new platform.
- Engineer reliable extracts and ETL/ELT pipelines between source systems and the reporting/warehouse environment.
- Tune query and report performance, resolving long-running queries, timeouts, and large-volume export constraints.
- Implement and validate data security requirements, including row-level and column-level access controls, in line with company policy.
- Perform systematic data validation and reconciliation so that every reported figure ties back to source systems.
- Maintain technical documentation for data models, field definitions, and calculation rules.
Report Development & Analytical Delivery
- Design and publish reports, dashboards, and workbooks with appropriate filters, groupings, drilldowns, visualizations, and scheduled distribution.
- Translate business questions into data requirements, technical specifications, and the right reporting approach.
- Use advanced Excel (pivot tables, Power Query, lookups, nested formulas, conditional formatting, charts) to prototype logic, validate outputs, and deliver ad-hoc analysis.
- Analyze datasets to surface trends, anomalies, and data quality gaps, and recommend corrective action.
- Build reusable templates and automation that reduce manual, recurring reporting effort.
Stakeholder Enablement & Support
- Partner with business stakeholders, product, and engineering teams to gather requirements and set realistic delivery expectations.
- Provide troubleshooting support for report issues, access requests, and data discrepancies during and after the transition.
- Deliver walkthroughs, demos, and enablement sessions that help users adopt the new platform and self-serve confidently.
- Contribute to reporting standards, governance practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelors degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Mandatory: strong, demonstrable hands-on SQL expertise, including query optimization and performance tuning on large relational datasets.
- Proven experience building reports and dashboards in a BI or embedded reporting tool (Izenda, Sigma, Power BI, SSRS, Tableau, Looker, or similar).
- Solid understanding of how enterprise reporting works end to end requirements, data sourcing, modeling, report design, validation, security, and distribution.
- Data engineering fundamentals: data modeling, ETL/ELT concepts, data quality and validation techniques.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, Power Query, and complex formula logic.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with high attention to detail and a validation-first mindset.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to explain technical outcomes to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple parallel requests in a changing, migration-driven environment.
Preferred
- Direct experience with Izenda and/or Sigma Computing.
- Prior involvement in a BI or reporting platform migration, upgrade, or consolidation programme.
- Exposure to cloud data warehouses (Snowflake or equivalent) and cloud-native analytics.
- Familiarity with row-level / column-level security models and reporting access governance.
- Domain exposure to HR, payroll, benefits, PEO, or time and labor data.
- Working knowledge of Python or a scripting language for data automation.
- Experience with version control and change management for reporting assets.
Performance Metrics
- Migration progress: number of legacy reports assessed, rebuilt, validated, and signed off against plan.
- Data accuracy: parity between legacy and new reports, and reconciliation results against source systems.
- Report and query performance: run-time reduction, timeout elimination, and export efficiency.
- Turnaround time and on-time delivery of report requests, enhancements, and migration milestones.
- Stakeholder and end-user satisfaction with reporting support, enablement, and adoption of the new platform.
- Quality and completeness of documentation, mapping sheets, and adherence to reporting and security standards.
- Contribution to standardization, automation, and report catalogue rationalization.
