Role: Cloud Engineer, Systems
Windows or Linux Server Engineering in the Cloud
Role Summary
We are moving customer workloads into Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and running them on a managed services platform built as code. As a Cloud Engineer, Systems, you are the server expert on the team: you build, migrate, and support customer Windows or Linux servers using the platform automation, and you extend that automation for operating system tasks. You will also provide Tier 2 support for customer environments already in production.
We are hiring for both Windows-focused and Linux-focused engineers under this role. The focus is server and cloud infrastructure engineering. Deep expertise in Oracle applications or databases is not required.
Key Responsibilities
Server Build and Configuration
- Deploy customer servers through the team's OpenTofu modules, Ansible playbooks, and CI/CD pipelines, and extend them when a build needs something new.
- Configure, harden, and patch Windows or Linux servers to platform standards using Ansible, including monitoring, backup, and security agents.
- Handle directory integration, DNS, storage, and application prerequisites at the operating system level.
Migrations
- Set up and monitor workload replication, execute cutovers, and run post-cutover checks from documented runbooks.
- Fix operating system issues after migration: boot, drivers, networking, licensing and activation, and performance.
- Handle older and end-of-life operating systems, recommending the safest path to migrate or upgrade them.
Customer Setting Support
- Provide Tier 2 support for running customer environments: troubleshoot incidents, fulfill service requests,
and execute changes following change management processes.
- Perform backup restores and take part in disaster recovery tests.
- Escalate complex issues to the Cloud Architect with clear findings and next steps.
Automation and Documentation
- Write Python, PowerShell, or Bash automation for repeatable operating system tasks, delivered through GitHub pull requests.
- Write and maintain runbooks and knowledge base articles for the servers you build and support, so Tier 1 engineers can operate them without escalating.
- Work second shift with overlap for handoffs to the US team, and join the on-call rotation after onboarding.
Required Skills and Experience
- 4+ years in systems administration or engineering, including 2+ years supporting servers in a major public cloud (OCI, Azure, or AWS).
- Deep, hands-on expertise in either Windows Server or Linux, with working knowledge of the other.
- Windows focus: Windows Server administration, Active Directory, DNS and DHCP, Group Policy, IIS, patching, and performance troubleshooting.
- Linux focus: Oracle Linux, RHEL, or Ubuntu administration, systemd, LVM and file systems, package management, SELinux, patching, and performance troubleshooting.
- Scripting for automation: Python, plus PowerShell for Windows or Bash for Linux.
- Working knowledge of Terraform or OpenTofu: reading, running,
and extending existing modules.
- Ansible: writing and maintaining playbooks and roles for Windows or Linux configuration (or strong experience with a comparable tool such as Chef, Puppet, or PowerShell DSC).
- Git and GitHub: branches, pull requests, and code review.
- Core cloud services in at least one major cloud: compute, block storage, virtual networking, and identity and access management.
- Experience supporting production environments: incident troubleshooting, service requests, and change execution.
- Lifelong learner: self-driven to research, study documentation and training videos, and figure out unfamiliar technologies on the fly.
- Sound judgment in handling customer data securely and working within compliance requirements such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001.
- Clear written and spoken English; comfortable documenting work and collaborating with US-based team members.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- OCI hands-on experience (strongly preferred). Candidates with strong Azure or AWS backgrounds who are ready to ramp on OCI are encouraged to apply.
- Server migration into public cloud, using tools such as OCI Cloud Migrations, RackWare, Azure Migrate, or AWS Application Migration Service.
- Image and bootstrap tooling such as Packer or cloud-init.
- Backup and disaster recovery tooling (OCI Full Stack DR, Azure Site Recovery, or similar).
- Hands-on experience across more than one public cloud.
- Practical experience using AI-assisted engineering tools.
- Managed-services or MSP experience.
- Certifications: RHCSA or RHCE, Microsoft AZ-800/AZ-801, AZ-104, OCI Architect Associate, or equivalent.
