The Role

This is an applied training science role for a sports scientist, exercise physiologist, or sports physiotherapist who wants to build the science into a product rather than apply it one client at a time.

Health technology has over-indexed on collecting data and under-delivered on outcomes. We are building the training science that sits underneath the product, not alongside it. Electromagnetic Resistance is a young category, and the research base has not caught up with the hardware. Portl is building it - validating our training models against real device telemetry. This role owns that work.

You own the training science inside Portl hardware and software. Reporting to the Head of Performance Science, you will:

- Own the rules behind the exercise library - how movements are classified, how load progresses, and how the system decides what a user trains next.
- Own and improve Portl’s strength scoring model and its coefficients, checking them against real device data and refining them as the data grows.




- Decide how each resistance profile the hardware can produce maps to a training outcome, and where free-weight research does and does not apply.
- Define the assessment protocols that set a user’s baseline and measure whether they are actually progressing.
- Own the claims boundary - what our evidence supports today, and what studies we need to run before we can say more.
- Set the scientific standards that programs and coaching cues are held to, including what correct execution looks like for each movement.

You will work closely with product, engineering and data science.

What We’re Looking For

- Formal education (mandatory): Bachelor’s or Master’s in Exercise Science, Sports Science, Kinesiology, Physiotherapy (BPT/MPT), Sports Medicine, or Human Movement Science.
- 3+ years applying exercise science professionally - sports science, strength and conditioning, exercise physiology, sports medicine, or rehabilitation.
- Certification (strong plus): NSCA CSCS, ACSM, NASM, REPS India, SAI/NIS, or equivalent.
- Further plus: FMS/SFMA, EXOS XPS, FRC/FRA, postgraduate research or publications.
- Also required: Current CPR/AED.




- Direct experience with training or assessment technology - force plates, velocity-based training, dynamometry, motion capture, wearables, or isokinetic testing. Not client work alone.
- Research literacy. You can read a research paper, see the weaknesses in how the study was done, and judge whether the results really support the claim.
- Comfortable with data. Strong spreadsheet skills are essential, since you will be working with device data directly.
- Analytical rigour - you can specify how you’d test whether a training model works, not just assert that it does.
- Willingness to relocate to Hyderabad and work full-time in office.

Strong Plus, Not Required

- Prior work in connected fitness, digital health, wearables, or medical devices.
- Familiarity with behaviour change frameworks - self-determination theory, transtheoretical model, habit formation.
- Experience in clinical or clinical settings, or working alongside physiotherapists.
