Should-Cost Engineering Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain should-cost models for mechanical, electrical, and electro-mechanical products using manufacturing process, material, labor, tooling, overhead, yield, and volume assumptions.
- Use aPriori and other cost-engineering tools to establish fact-based product costs and identify key cost drivers and cost-reduction opportunities.
- Provide cost analysis during early product concept and architecture phases to support Design-to-Cost (DTC), DFM/DFA, material selection, process selection, and design trade-offs.
- Analyse engineering drawings, GDT, BOMs, and MBOMs to identify cost drivers related to materials, tolerances, part complexity, manufacturing processes, and assembly.
- Develop clean-sheet cost estimates and benchmark supplier quotations against should-cost models to identify cost gaps and support supplier negotiations and sourcing decisions.
- Partner with Engineering, DFX, NPI, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to drive cost-effective product designs without compromising performance, quality, reliability, or manufacturability.
- Conduct cost analysis for sheet metal, machining, welding, casting, extrusion, injection molding, coating, electrical assemblies, and mechanical/electrical integration.
- Lead and drive global cost-out initiatives across CMs and suppliers, partnering with Engineering, Procurement, Supply Chain,
and Manufacturing to identify, quantify, negotiate, and implement sustainable cost-reduction opportunities across products and manufacturing locations.
- Support Value Engineering / Value Analysis (VE/VA) initiatives and develop cost-reduction roadmaps for current and existing products.
- Evaluate tooling, fixtures, equipment, manufacturing processes, and supplier capability to determine their impact on product cost and investment requirements.
- Assess cost impacts of engineering changes, material substitutions, localization, process changes, and supplier changes.
- Establish and track cost targets, cost-critical-to-quality (CTQ) factors, cost gaps, cost avoidance, and realized savings throughout the NPI lifecycle.
- Continuously improve cost models using actual production data, supplier inputs, manufacturing cycle times, material pricing, yield, and lessons learned from prototype and production builds.
- Develop standardized Design-to-Cost / DFX cost guidelines and databases to enable consistent cost decisions across product development programs.
