About The Company Our client is a 10-year-old UK-based maritime technology company specialising in risk management and protection of subsea cables and offshore infrastructure.

Over the last two years the company has built its own proprietary platform that uses AIS vessel tracking technology to identify ships coming dangerously close to their clients'''' submarine cables. The system generates real-time alerts, managed through an operations centre in the Philippines. The platform is live and operational, with a growing pipeline of new features to productionise.

The Role This is a high-ownership, sole developer role. You will take full end-to-end ownership of our platform, inheriting and running an existing production codebase while shipping new features and hardening existing systems. The founder has deep domain expertise but is not a software developer,



so you will be the primary technical decision-maker for the platform.

The right person is proactive, technically solid, and brings ideas to the table rather than waiting to be told what to do. We are a growing business with ambitions to expand the platform significantly, and this is the foundation hire for what will eventually become a larger India-based engineering team.

What You Will Own

- Full ownership of the platform end-to-end: a Python (FastAPI) serverless backend on AWS (Lambda, Step Functions, SQS, DynamoDB, Aurora PostgreSQL) with a React/TypeScript and Mapbox frontend
- Maintain and improve AIS data integrations and geofence/incident alerting systems
- Productionise new features from prototype work, including weather layers and cable risk scoring
- Maintain CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, including outside standard hours when needed
- Contribute to technical architecture decisions as the platform evolves

- Geospatial: PostGIS (core requirement)

Must-Have Skills

- Senior Python and AWS serverless experience, including CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code
- Strong PostGIS / geospatial experience in a production environment - this is a hard requirement and will be tested in the interview process




- Comfortable inheriting and owning an existing codebase solo, without another engineer to hand off to
- Proactive problem-solver who surfaces solutions independently rather than waiting for direction
- Good English communication - will work directly with the UK-based founder via daily sync calls

Nice to Have

- TimescaleDB experience
- Node.js familiarity
- Maritime or AIS (Automatic Identification System) domain knowledge
- Experience working with mapping or geospatial visualisation tools (Mapbox or similar)

Candidate Profile The ideal candidate has 3-5 years of experience and is open-minded and adaptable rather than too set in their ways. Callum is not looking for the most experienced engineer available - he wants someone with the right technical foundations who can grow with the business, think creatively, and take ownership without needing to be managed closely.
