Designation: OT Staff Nurse

Job Summary The OT Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and quality nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures. The nurse will assist surgeons,

anesthetists, and other OT team members before, during, and after procedures while maintaining strict adherence to infection-control, patient-safety, and hospital protocols.

Key Responsibilities

1. Pre-Operative Responsibilities

Receive and verify the patient before shifting to the OT. Check patient identity, consent forms, procedure/site verification, and relevant medical records.

Ensure pre-operative investigations and reports are available.

Confirm availability of blood, implants, special instruments, and required consumables where applicable.

Prepare the OT, instruments, equipment, and surgical trolley before the procedure.

Ensure all required medicines and emergency drugs are available.

Assist in maintaining proper patient positioning and pre-operative preparation.

Follow the surgical safety checklist and WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.

1. Intra-Operative Responsibilities

Assist the surgeon and anesthetist during surgical procedures. Work as Scrub Nurse or Circulating Nurse as assigned.

Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques.

Handle surgical instruments and supplies appropriately.

Perform instrument, sponge, needle, and swab counts before, during, and after surgery.

Anticipate the requirements of the surgeon during the procedure.

Maintain proper documentation of instruments, consumables, implants, and medicines used.

Ensure specimens are correctly labelled and sent to the appropriate department.

Monitor patient safety and immediately report any abnormality or emergency.

Assist during emergencies, resuscitation, and other critical situations as required.

1. Post-Operative Responsibilities

Assist in shifting the patient safely from OT to ICU/recovery/ward.



Give proper handover to the receiving nurse regarding the patient's condition,

procedure performed, drains, lines, medications, and any special instructions.

Ensure the OT is cleaned, disinfected, and prepared for the next case.

Ensure used instruments are properly segregated and sent for sterilization.

Check and replenish OT stock after every procedure.

Complete all required OT documentation and records.

Infection Control & Safety

Strictly follow hospital infection-control policies.

Maintain sterile technique throughout procedures.

Follow biomedical waste segregation protocols.

Ensure proper disinfection and sterilization of OT equipment and instruments.

Report any break in sterility, needle-stick injury, equipment malfunction, or infection-

control issue immediately.

Follow fire, electrical, emergency, and patient-safety protocols.

Inventory & Equipment Management

Maintain adequate stock of OT instruments, consumables, sutures, gloves, drapes,

medicines, and emergency supplies.

Check expiry dates and storage conditions of medicines and consumables.

Maintain proper records of implants and high-value consumables.

Immediately inform the OT Incharge about shortages, damages, or expired items.

Ensure proper functioning and cleanliness of OT equipment.

Documentation

Maintain accurate OT registers and procedure records.

Document instrument and sponge counts.

Record consumables, implants, medicines, and other materials used during procedures.

Complete patient-related nursing documentation on time.

Maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Coordination





Coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, nursing staff, RMO, ICU, ward, CSSD,

pharmacy, blood bank, and other departments as required.

Ensure timely communication regarding OT schedules and patient requirements.

Follow instructions of the OT Incharge and treating consultant.

Maintain professional communication with patients, relatives, doctors, and hospital staff.

Qualifications

GNM / B.Sc. Nursing.

Valid Nursing Council registration.

OT experience preferred.

Experience in a cardiac hospital, multispeciality hospital, or critical-care environment will be an advantage.

Required Skills

Good knowledge of OT procedures and aseptic techniques.

Knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.

Good communication and coordination skills.

Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies.

Good observation and attention to detail.

Team-oriented and disciplined approach.

Ability to maintain accurate documentation.

Work Responsibilities & Discipline

Report for duty on time and complete handover properly.

Follow the hospital's duty roster and OT schedule.

Maintain skilled behaviour and appropriate dress code.

No unauthorized person should be permitted inside the OT.

Any incident, error, shortage, or equipment problem must be immediately reported to the OT Incharge.

Failure to follow patient-safety, infection-control, or OT protocols may result in disciplinary action as per hospital policy.

Key Performance Indicators (KPI)

Compliance with OT and infection-control protocols.

Accuracy of instrument, sponge, and swab counts.

Timely OT preparation and turnover.

Accuracy of OT documentation.

Proper handling and utilization of consumables.

Patient safety and quality of nursing care.

Team coordination and communication.

Maintenance of OT cleanliness and readiness.

Pay: ₹15,000.00 - ₹20,000.00 per month
