Roles and Responsibilities of a Microbiology Technician
- Collect, receive, label, and properly store microbiological samples.
- Prepare culture media, reagents, and laboratory solutions.
- Perform microbial culture and isolation using aseptic techniques.
- Conduct tests such as Gram staining, microscopy, biochemical tests, and microbial identification.
- Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing when required.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, and centrifuges.
- Follow SOPs, laboratory safety procedures, and biosafety guidelines.
- Monitor and maintain quality control of laboratory tests and media.
- Record, verify, and report test results accurately.
- Maintain proper laboratory documentation and sample traceability.
- Clean, disinfect, and sterilize laboratory work areas and equipment.
- Dispose of biological and laboratory waste according to safety procedures.
- Report equipment problems, contamination, or unusual test results to the supervisor.
- Assist microbiologists and other laboratory staff with routine testing and investigations.
