Description
Track 1: Intermediate DBA (PostgreSQL / MySQL / SQL Server, cloud-agnostic) + EBS DBA
Role Summary An Intermediate DBA manages, tunes, secures, and troubleshoots relational database systems across on-prem and cloud environments. This role sits between junior (mostly reactive, guided work) and senior (architecture, mentoring, capacity planning) expect hands-on ownership of multiple databases with moderate independence.
Also have EBS / APPS DBA knowledge.
Core Responsibilities
Install, configure, and maintain PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQL Server instances
Design and implement backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies
Monitor performance, identify bottlenecks, and tune queries/indexes
Manage user access, roles, and security policies
Implement and maintain replication and high availability (HA) setups
Perform routine maintenance: vacuuming, index rebuilds, statistics updates
Manage database migrations and version upgrades
Write and optimize complex SQL queries and stored procedures
Support cloud-hosted databases (AWS/Azure/GCP) provisioning, scaling, monitoring
Collaborate with dev teams on schema design and query optimization
Maintain documentation and runbooks; participate in on-call rotation

PostgreSQL
Architecture: MVCC, WAL, background writer, autovacuum
EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE and query plan reading
Indexing: B-tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN — when to use each
Backup tools: pg_dump, pg_basebackup, WAL archiving, PITR
Replication: streaming (sync/async), logical replication, pg_stat_replication
Connection pooling: PgBouncer
Extensions: pg_stat_statements, PostGIS (if relevant), pgcrypto
Roles, privileges, GRANT / REVOKE, row-level security
Partitioning (declarative, range/list/hash)
Tuning params: shared_buffers, work_mem, maintenance_work_mem, effective_cache_size
