Recently, KPI Green Energys subsidiary executed an agreement with GUVNL for 445 MW / 890 MWh of standalone BESS projects, marking a significant step in the Groups energy-storage business.
Role Purpose:-
- The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is the technological visionary, R&D; architect, and final technical authority for the organization's advanced battery technology platform.
- The role owns the end-to-end battery technology roadmap across LFP, Silicon-based Anodes, Sulfur systems, and Nickel-rich Cathodes, covering fundamental materials science, electrochemistry, cell development, validation and technology readiness.
- The CTO is responsible for ensuring that battery innovations are scientifically robust, commercially viable, manufacturable at scale and defensible through a strong intellectual property portfolio.
- This position serves as the final technical authority for chemistry selection, cell architecture, product validation, technology qualification and chemistry readiness for manufacturing, while bridging R&D;, Cell, BESS, Manufacturing and external scientific partners.
Responsibilities:-
- Define and own the multi-generation battery chemistry technology roadmap covering LFP, Silicon-based Anodes,
Sulfur systems and Nickel-rich Cathodes.
- Lead advanced battery R&D; across electrode materials synthesis, electrolyte formulation, SEI/CEI engineering, interfacial chemistry, degradation mechanisms and electrochemical performance.
- Drive hypothesis-driven research supported by electrochemical modelling, materials characterization and accelerated aging studies, ensuring scientific rigor, reproducibility and technical documentation.
- Lead cell design and electrochemical architecture, including electrode balancing, energy density, safety, thermal behaviour, degradation and lifecycle performance.
- Own key cell performance metrics including capacity retention, rate capability, cycle life, calendar life and abuse tolerance, and approve final cell designs for pilot and mass production.
- Serve as the final technical authority for chemistry and cell-level product validation, defining validation protocols, qualification criteria, failure thresholds and acceptance limits.
- Evaluate technology readiness levels (TRLs) and make go/no-go recommendations on chemistry transitions, technology investments and manufacturing readiness.
- Lead technical evaluation and approval of active material, electrolyte, additive, separator and specialty-material suppliers, including scientific and electrochemical supplier audits.
- Build and protect a strong battery technology patent portfolio covering materials compositions, processing methods, cell architecture and degradation mitigation strategies.
- Lead patent strategy, freedom-to-operate (FTO) assessments and competitive patent landscaping in collaboration with IP counsel.
- Drive the transition of battery technologies from fundamental R&D; and laboratory development to validated cell prototypes, pilot production and scalable manufacturing.
- Work closely with Cell, BESS and Manufacturing leadership to establish critical material parameters, process sensitivities and acceptable variability windows for industrial-scale production.
- Lead external scientific collaborations with universities, national laboratories and research consortia, and represent the organization in scientific forums, peer reviews and advisory boards.
- Build, mentor and lead high-caliber multidisciplinary battery R&D; teams while maintaining strong scientific credibility with investors, regulators, customers and strategic partners.
Experience Required
- 15-20 years of overall experience, with at least 10+ years of significant experience in battery R&D;, advanced battery technologies, electrochemistry, materials science or related fields.
- Proven experience leading multidisciplinary battery R&D; teams and advanced technology programs.
- Demonstrated experience taking battery chemistries from fundamental research through validated cell prototypes and towards pilot or mass production.
- Strong expertise in advanced electrochemistry, electrode materials, electrolyte formulation, materials characterization, SEI/CEI engineering and battery degradation mechanisms.
- Solid understanding of LFP, Silicon-based Anodes, Sulfur systems and/or Nickel-rich NMC/NCA cathode technologies.
- Experience in cell design, electrochemical modelling, cell validation, accelerated aging, failure analysis and technology readiness assessment.
- Demonstrated patent portfolio in battery technologies, including experience with patent strategy, IP development and competitive patent landscaping.
- Experience translating battery R&D; into commercially viable and manufacturable technologies, with an understanding of scale-up, process sensitivities and quality requirements.
- Experience working with universities, national laboratories, research consortia, technology partners, suppliers and other strategic stakeholders.
