Department: Design & Engineering
Reporting To: Head of Engineering
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Assistant Manager – DER & BTM Systems Engineering to bridge technical design, product engineering, and client-facing solution architecture for Behind-the-Meter (BTM) microgrids. In this role, you will interact directly with Commercial & Industrial (C&I;) clients to capture operational requirements, formulate the system Operating Philosophy, evaluate and qualify BESS/PV hardware vendors, and perform end-to-end detailed engineering for integrated PV + BESS + DG + Grid power systems.
You will be responsible for plant-level power system design, single-line diagrams (SLDs), transition dynamics, control panel design and mounting layouts, and deep equipment-level operational integration across transformers, switchgear, protection relays, and control logic.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
1. Client Interaction & Operating Philosophy Formulation
- Act as the technical primary contact during pre-sales and detailed engineering phases to gather client site load profiles, and operational goals.
- Develop tailored Operating Philosophies for BTM microgrid applications, including Peak Shaving, Time-of-Use (TOU) Arbitrage, resource synchronization, Black Start, and Zero Export limits.
- Define microgrid grid-edge operational dynamics, including seamless grid-tied to islanding transitions, transition time limits, mode switching and auto-synchronization/re-sync schemes with the utility grid and diesel generators.
2. Product/Vendor Identification, Evaluation & Qualification
- Identify, evaluate, and technically qualify OEM products and suppliers for PCS inverters, LFP battery racks, solar inverters, microgrid controllers, and balance of plant (BOP) equipment.
- Assess the technical suitability of products against project-specific requirements, environmental conditions, grid interconnect codes,
and duty cycles.
- Conduct technical due diligence, bid evaluations (TBE), compliance matrix reviews.
3. Power System Equipment-Level Engineering
- Possess deep equipment-level operational understanding and design experience across major power system assets:
- Switchgear & Circuit Breakers: HT/LT switchgear selection, breaking/making capacities, busbar sizing, motorized breaker interlocks, and auto-transfer switching (ATS/AMF) logic.
- Protection Relays & Logic Operations: Comprehensive protection schemes (overcurrent, earth fault, differential, reverse power, rate of change of frequency - ROCOF, vector shift), relay coordination, and programmable logic operations for interlocks and safety trips.
- Perform end-to-end electrical detailed engineering for facilities, including DC/AC coupling topologies, short-circuit calculations, and voltage drop analysis.
4. Control Panel Wiring Schemes & Panel Mounting Arrangements
- Draft and review detailed electrical schematics, including Panel Wiring Diagrams, I/O lists, terminal block layouts, CT/PT circuit wiring, and auxiliary power distribution.
- Panel Mounting & Physical Layouts: Define General Arrangement (GA) drawings, panel elevation views, base channel plinth mounting details, cable gland plate layouts, and maintenance clearances ensuring IP55/IP65 environmental ratings.
- Ensure design adherence to relevant international and Indian standards
- Establish communication architectures between field meters, protection relays, PLCs, BMS, and EMS (Modbus RTU/TCP, CAN bus, IEC 61850).
5. Execution Support & Testing
- Prepare complete Approved-for-Construction (AFC)
drawing packages and technical specs for procurement and vendor panel builders.
- Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for control panels, switchgear, power transformers, and BESS enclosures.
- Support site commissioning engineers during hot testing, PV-DG-BESS synchronization, transition timing validation, and operating philosophy verification.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
Mandatory Criteria
- Education: B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering or M.E. / M.Tech in Control Systems /Electrical Engineering / Power Systems.
- Experience: 5 to 8 years of hands-on experience in detailed electrical engineering for power plants, captive power plant, or C&I; renewable microgrids.
Technical Knowledge & Competencies
- Power Systems & Equipment Mastery: Operational knowledge of transformers, HT/LT switchgear, circuit breakers, protection relays, and control logic interlocks.
- Microgrid Operational Dynamics: Strong grasp of transition timing, V/F vs. P/Q inverter control modes, islanding detection, and auto-synchronization mechanisms.
- Vendor & Product Evaluation: Proven capability in technical vendor qualification, product suitability analysis, and TBE preparation.
- Control Panel Schematics & Layouts: Expertise in reading, drafting, and troubleshooting control panel wiring schemes, physical GA drawings, panel mounting arrangements, and relay interlocks.
- Software Tools: AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP / PVsyst or HOMER (for hybrid system optimization).
- Communication & Standards: Clear understanding of panel manufacturing standards (IEC 61439), switchgear design, and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850).
Soft Skills
- Robust technical presentation and client communication skills (ability to explain complex operational philosophies to plant owners/CTOs).
- Analytical mindset with high attention to detail in drawing reviews, vendor evaluations, and technical documentation.
