We’re hiring a dedicated People & Culture Specialist to help people build fulfilling careers and a company they’re proud of.

Better is a team of individual contributors, with functional leads focused on the work. We need someone who brings equal ownership to people: understanding what motivates them, helping them grow, and making sure concerns turn into conversations and action.

Recruitment and people operations are already covered. You will have the space and authority to build the People & Culture function, working closely with the founder.

What you'll own
• Know the team and act early: Build trusted relationships through regular 1:1s. Understand each person’s ambitions, strengths, and challenges. Spot opportunities for greater responsibility and signs of disengagement, then take action.
• Drive growth and performance: Build individual development plans, create learning opportunities, and establish a consistent rhythm of feedback. Partner with functional leads to set explicit expectations and help people make measurable progress.
• Improve how we work together:



Identify friction, gaps in communication, and practices that hold people back. Own improvements from decision through execution, and handle sensitive concerns with discretion.
• Team culture: Build team rituals, all-hands, and offsites that create belonging and shared pride in the work.
• Employer brand: Bring the team’s work and experiences to life through team podcasts, behind-the-scenes blogs and posts, and community initiatives such as hackathons.

What we are looking for
You’ve built people practices in a startup or small, growing team. You’ve personally coached employees, handled difficult conversations, and made decisions without an established HR structure around you.

You combine empathy with candour. You’re curious about people’s work, comfortable exercising independent judgment, and consistent about following through. You can earn trust across the team and challenge leadership when needed.
