Sanskrit & Urdu Manuscript Paleographer and Translator
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Sanskrit & Urdu Manuscript Specialist who can read, understand, transcribe, and translate historical manuscripts into English.
The person should have strong knowledge of Sanskrit/Urdu, historical manuscripts, paleography (old handwriting/scripts), and scholarly translation.
The selected candidate will examine the manuscript, identify the script and writing style, prepare an accurate transcription, and provide a clear English translation with supporting notes.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine the manuscript and identify the language, script, and handwriting style.
- Assess the manuscript from a paleography and manuscriptology perspective.
- Identify, where possible, the approximate historical period of the manuscript.
- Prepare a diplomatic transcription of the original text without changing or correcting the source unnecessarily.
- Clearly mark any unclear, damaged, missing, or difficult-to-read text.
- Translate the Sanskrit and Urdu content accurately into English.
- Provide explanations or notes for difficult words, terminology, abbreviations, grammar, or unclear passages.
- Clearly differentiate between what is directly readable and any scholarly interpretation or reconstruction.
- Document the methodology used for transcription and translation.
- Provide relevant academic qualifications, CV, publications, or qualified credentials.
- Provide a signed/certified translation or verification if specifically required.
Required Qualifications
- Master's or PhD in Sanskrit, Urdu, Indology, Manuscriptology, Paleography, Classical Indian Studies, or a related field.
- Strong reading and translation skills in Sanskrit.
- Ability to read historical Sanskrit manuscripts, particularly Devanagari or related scripts.
- Knowledge or professional experience in paleography and manuscript studies.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience working with manuscripts, historical texts, archives, research, or scholarly translation.
- Proven experience in transcribing and translating Sanskrit and/or Urdu manuscripts.
- Ability to prepare professional and academically reliable documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and report uncertain or illegible text.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Sanskrit, Urdu, Manuscript Studies, Indian Paleography, or a related subject.
- Research publications related to Sanskrit/Urdu manuscripts or historical texts.
- Experience working with universities, museums, libraries, archives, or manuscript repositories.
- Experience preparing diplomatic editions or scholarly translations.
- Experience providing certified or institutionally verified translations.
- Knowledge of manuscript dating, provenance, scribal traditions, and textual criticism.
Expected Deliverables
The selected candidate will be expected to provide:
- Script & Paleographic Assessment – Identify and describe the script and handwriting style.
- Diplomatic Transcription – Accurate transcription of the original manuscript, clearly marking unclear or damaged sections.
- English Translation – Accurate and scholarly English translation.
- Translation Notes – Explanations for important linguistic or textual issues.
- Methodology Statement – Brief explanation of how the manuscript was examined, transcribed, and translated.
- Credentials – CV, academic qualifications, publications, and relevant experience.
- Certification/Verification – Signed or certified translation, if required.
