The Role
We're looking for a Senior Platform Architect to design, build, and lead the technical foundation of our platform. You will own the architecture of our real-time media infrastructure, from deploying and scaling LiveKit across multiple regions to building the multi-tenant SaaS layer that powers customer accounts, usage metering, billing, and observability.
What You'll Do
Media infrastructure
- Design and deploy a production-grade, self-hosted LiveKit infrastructure (SFU, Egress, Ingress, and TURN) that is highly available, secure, and cost-effective.
- Architect a multi-region deployment strategy, including intelligent routing of users to the nearest server and a solution for low-latency sessions between participants in different regions.
- Plan capacity and autoscaling for media servers, recording, and transcoding workloads, including node sizing, room placement, and graceful draining during upgrades.
- Design broadcast workflows that bridge real-time WebRTC sessions to large audiences via RTMP, HLS/LL-HLS, and CDN delivery.
- Ensure reliable connectivity across restrictive networks and corporate firewalls through proper TURN configuration.
SaaS platform
- Design the multi-tenant architecture: customer accounts, projects, API key management, token-based authentication, and tenant isolation.
- Build an accurate, tamper-resistant usage metering system (participant-minutes, recording minutes, bandwidth) integrated with our billing system.
- Design our public REST APIs, webhooks, and customer dashboard backend.
- Define our SDK strategy, including whether and how we wrap LiveKit client SDKs for Web, iOS, Android, Flutter, and React Native.
Reliability, quality, and security
- Build observability from the ground up: metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, and per-session quality-of-experience dashboards (join time, packet loss, jitter, freezes, drop rate).
- Establish incident response processes, on-call practices, and SLOs for the platform.
- Implement security best practices, including encryption in transit, optional end-to-end encryption, DDoS protection for UDP endpoints, and secrets management.
- Prepare the platform for compliance requirements such as GDPR, SOC 2, and [HIPAA, if relevant].
Leadership
- Own key architecture decisions and document them clearly for the team.
- Work with founders and product leadership to align technical direction with business goals, including infrastructure cost and bandwidth economics.
- Help hire, mentor, and lead engineers across backend, DevOps/SRE, and SDK development.
- Engage with the LiveKit open-source community and contribute upstream where it benefits us.
What You Bring
Required
- 10+ years of experience in backend, infrastructure, or distributed systems engineering.
- Hands-on production experience with WebRTC, including a solid understanding of ICE, STUN/TURN, SDP, DTLS-SRTP, and SFU architecture.
- Experience deploying and operating LiveKit (strongly preferred) or a comparable media server such as mediasoup, Janus, Jitsi, or Pion-based systems.
- Strong understanding of real-time media concepts: codecs (Opus, VP8, VP9, H.264, AV1), simulcast and SVC, bandwidth estimation, packet loss recovery, and adaptive bitrate.
- Proficiency in Go (preferred) or another systems language such as Rust, C++, or Java.
- Deep experience with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including networking challenges specific to UDP and stateful workloads.
- Experience with Redis, message systems (NATS, Kafka, or similar), and relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar).
- Experience building observability systems using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or similar.
- Proven ability to design systems that scale to thousands of concurrent users and to reason clearly about cost, latency, and reliability trade-offs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Nice to have
- Experience at a real-time communications company (e.g., Agora, Twilio, Vonage, Zoom, Daily, 100ms, Dolby.io, LiveKit) or on the video infrastructure team of a large consumer app.
- Contributions to open-source WebRTC or media projects (LiveKit, Pion, mediasoup, Janus, GStreamer, FFmpeg).
- Experience with live streaming protocols and pipelines: RTMP, SRT, WHIP/WHEP, HLS/LL-HLS, DASH, and CDN integration.
- Experience with GPU-based transcoding and recording pipelines.
- Experience designing usage-based billing systems for SaaS or API products.
- Experience with bare-metal or hybrid infrastructure to reduce bandwidth costs.
- Familiarity with client SDK development on mobile or web.
- Experience achieving SOC 2, HIPAA, or GDPR compliance.
