About the Role We are looking for a Senior Content Writer & Editor with strong experience in children’s books and children’s publishing. This is not a conventional content-writing role. We are looking for someone who understands that creating a children’s book is not simply about writing a good copy. It is about understanding the child, building the right narrative, structuring information appropriately, creating moments of curiosity and engagement, and working closely with the design team to bring the complete book to life. You should be a strong storyteller, an exceptional editor, highly attentive to detail, and deeply child-first in your thinking. You will work on books from idea to final execution — developing, writing, editing, refining, and collaborating with designers throughout the process. What You Will Do Own content end-to-end Take ownership of the content of a book from the initial idea through final production. You will be expected to: Understand the objective, age group, format, and learning/play intent of each book. Develop the content structure, flow, tone, and narrative. Write original stories, activities, explanations, prompts, conversations, educational content, and other book formats. Build on concepts and briefs provided by the team, while also bringing your own ideas and creative thinking. Edit and refine content multiple times based on feedback, testing, and design requirements. Ensure consistency in voice, language, facts, terminology, characters, and overall narrative across the book. Be an excellent storyteller We need someone who genuinely knows how to tell a story for a child. You should be able to: Write stories that are engaging, age-appropriate,
and emotionally resonant. Create strong openings, pacing, progression, and endings. Make educational content feel engaging rather than instructional or textbook-like. Understand how humour, curiosity, surprise, conflict, repetition, imagination, and emotion work differently for children of different ages. Translate complex ideas into language that children can naturally understand. Develop characters, situations, and worlds that feel relatable to children. Bring a child-first lens Everything you create should begin with the question: “How will a child experience this?” You should be able to think deeply about: What a child will understand or misunderstand. What will hold their attention. What will make them curious enough to continue. Whether the language feels natural for the intended age group. Whether the content respects a child's intelligence without becoming too complex. Whether a page feels engaging, overwhelming, boring, confusing, or delightful. Work closely with the design team Content and design at Kidureka are closely connected. You will work alongside designers and illustrators throughout the book-making process to ensure the content and visual language work together. This includes: Communicating the intent behind the content clearly to designers.
Discussing page flow, storytelling beats, hierarchy, visual cues, and content placement. Understanding how text, illustration, typography, activities, icons, and visual elements work together. Reviewing designed pages and identifying content-related issues in the visual execution. Suggesting where content needs to be shortened, expanded, rearranged, clarified, or visually supported. Collaborating on how an idea can best be communicated to a child through a combination of words and visuals. You will not be responsible for making design decisions, but you must have strong visual literacy and understand how content and design come together to create the final experience. Be the eye for detail Children’s publishing requires an extremely high level of accuracy. You will be responsible for identifying and resolving: Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax errors. Inconsistencies in language, terminology, names, facts, and formatting. Age-inappropriate or unclear language. Repetition and unnecessary content. Gaps in logic or story flow. Factual inaccuracies. Content that does not align with the visual execution. Small inconsistencies that may affect the overall quality of the book. You should naturally notice the details that others miss. Collaborate, don't work in isolation You will work closely with: Designers and illustrators Product and publishing teams Editors and reviewers Researchers and subject experts, where relevant The expectation is that you will discuss, question, explain, review, and iterate rather than simply complete your part and hand it over.
