Role Summary

The Linux Administrator will be responsible for installation, configuration, maintenance, security, backup, and performance of Linux servers across production, DR, and non-production environments. The role ensures high availability, system security, compliance, and operational stability.

Key Responsibilities

- Linux System Administration
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain Linux OS (RHEL, Rocky, Alma, Ubuntu)
- Manage server lifecycle: build, patching, decommissioning
- Kernel tuning and OS-level performance optimization
- User, group, sudo, PAM, and permission management
- Disk management: LVM, RAID, filesystem expansion
- Boot issues troubleshooting, GRUB recovery

- Security & Vulnerability Management
- Apply OS security hardening (CIS benchmarks, STIGs)
- Patch OS vulnerabilities (YUM/DNF/APT, live patching)
- Handle VAPT findings and remediation
- SELinux configuration and troubleshooting
- Firewall configuration (firewalld, iptables)
- SSH hardening, MFA integration where applicable
- Log monitoring and audit (auditd, rsyslog)

- Backup & Recovery
- Configure and manage backups using:
- Veeam / NetBackup / Commvault / Bacula / scripts
- Monitor backup success/failure
- Perform restore testing and DR drills
- Snapshot-based backups (VMware / Storage level)
- Documentation of backup & restore procedures

- Monitoring & Performance
- Configure monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana)
- Analyze CPU, memory, disk, I/O, and network issues
- Capacity planning and trend analysis
- Proactive alert handling

- Networking & Services




- Network configuration (bonding, VLANs, routing)
- DNS, NTP, chrony, time sync with AD
- Manage services:
- Apache / Nginx
- Postfix / Sendmail
- NFS, SMB
- FTP/SFTP
- Proxy servers (Squid)

- Virtualization & Cloud (if applicable)
- VMware / KVM administration
- VM provisioning, snapshots, cloning
- Cloud Linux instances (AWS / Azure basics)
- Cloud-init and automation

- Automation & Scripting
- Shell scripting (bash)
- Automation using Ansible (preferred)
- Cron job management
- Configuration management

- Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain SOPs, build documents, and runbooks
- Support audits (ISO, SOC, internal audits)
- Change management and incident response
- Coordination with security, backup, and application teams

- Operations & Support
- L2/L3 support for Linux-related issues
- RCA for incidents and outages
- On-call support (if required)
- Coordination with vendors and OEM support

Technical Skills

- Linux OS: RHEL 7/8/9, Ubuntu, SUSE
- Filesystems: ext4, xfs
- Backup tools (any enterprise-grade)
- Security tools & concepts
- Networking fundamentals
- VMware/Linux integration
- Troubleshooting production issues

Preferred Skills

- Ansible automation
- iDRAC / iLO / IPMI
- Container basics (Docker, Podman)
- Kubernetes (basic awareness)
- PXE / Kickstart
- Patch management tools (Satellite, Spacewalk)

Experience

- 3-8 years of Linux system administration experience
- Enterprise data center or cloud environment exposure

Certifications (Valuable to Have)

- RHCSA / RHCE
- Linux Foundation Certified Engineer
- ITIL (basic)
