Description

The Senior Engineer - Water Resources will be based in the Global Capability Centre in India and will support mining projects across all global regions. The role is primarily focused on hydrology and hydraulics, including flood estimation, catchment assessment, hydraulic model development, flood-risk evaluation and design support for mine water infrastructure. The successful candidate will be a hands-on modeller with demonstrated capability in TUFLOW. TUFLOW experience is mandatory. The position also includes a defined emphasis on tailings dam-break modelling, breach flood propagation and consequence mapping, while hydrology and hydraulic modelling remain the principal areas of responsibility.

Responsibilities

 Undertake hydrological assessments for mine sites, including catchment delineation, rainfall data review,
design storm selection, loss modelling, rainfall-runoff modelling, flow estimation and hydrograph development.
 Develop, run, calibrate, validate and review 1D/2D TUFLOW hydraulic models for riverine flooding, overland flow, mine drainage, watercourse diversions and hydraulic infrastructure assessments.
 Prepare model inputs including digital terrain models, computational meshes, roughness layers, boundary conditions, inflow hydrographs, hydraulic structures and scenario configurations.
 Assess flood depth, velocity, hazard, extent, afflux, flow paths and infrastructure interaction under existing, proposed and climate-change conditions.
 Interpret hydrological and hydraulic results and provide practical inputs to the design of channels, culverts, crossings, diversions, embankments, flood-protection works, ponds and other mine water management infrastructure.
 Perform model stability checks, mass-balance review, sensitivity testing, uncertainty assessment and
technical quality assurance,

with clear documentation of assumptions and limitations.
 Prepare flood maps, hazard maps, longitudinal profiles, time-series outputs, figures and GIS deliverables for engineering assessment and reporting.
 Prepare technical notes, calculation packages, model methodology reports, design reports and presentation material suitable for internal review and client delivery.
 Coordinate with hydrologists, geotechnical engineers, tailings engineers, civil designers and environmental specialists across global project teams.
 Provide technical guidance and model review support to junior engineers and contribute to consistent
modelling workflows and quality standards.

TAILINGS DAM-BREAK MODELLING
The role will support tailings and water-retaining structure breach assessments as a specialist application of hydrology and hydraulics. The engineer will work closely with tailings, geotechnical and risk specialists to develop technically defensible breach and consequence assessments.
 Develop and review TUFLOW dam-break models for tailings storage facilities, water dams and associated
containment structures.
 Support definition of credible breach scenarios, breach hydrographs, initial reservoir or pond conditions and downstream boundary conditions in coordination with relevant discipline leads.
 Model flood-wave propagation, arrival time, peak depth, velocity, hazard and inundation extent for selected breach scenarios.

 Prepare consequence mapping and model outputs to support downstream impact assessment, emergency planning inputs and risk-informed engineering decisions.
 Evaluate sensitivity to breach parameters, terrain representation, roughness, downstream controls and model resolution.
 Document the modelling basis, assumptions, limitations, model checks and interpretation of results in a transparent and auditable manner.

Qualifications

MANDATORY TECHNICAL SKILLS
TUFLOW MODELLING IS MANDATORY
Candidates must demonstrate hands-on project experience in building, running, troubleshooting,
checking and interpreting TUFLOW models.
 Strong applied knowledge of hydrology, open-channel hydraulics, floodplain processes, hydraulic structures and 1D/2D numerical modelling.
 Proficiency in TUFLOW model setup, control files, geometry, boundaries, structures, simulations, log and
check-file review, instability diagnosis and output interpretation.
 Experience producing and checking flood depth, velocity, hazard, extent, afflux and time-series outputs.
 Competence in QGIS or ArcGIS for terrain processing, spatial data preparation, model setup and results
mapping.
 Ability to independently solve modelling problems and communicate technical assumptions, uncertainty,
limitations and recommendations.
 High standard of technical writing, calculation documentation, file management and quality checking.

BGV:
• Employment with WSP India is subject to the successful completion of a background verification (“BGV”) check conducted by a third-party agency appointed by WSP India.
• Candidates are advised to ensure that all information provided during the recruitment process — including documents uploaded — is accurate and complete, both to WSP India and its BGV partner”.
