Uptownie is a D2C women's western wear brand that has been a staple in the segment for over a decade. We are agile, trend-driven and consumer-centric, and we run on weekly drops - which means our sourcing and production engine has to move faster than most.

We are hiring a Merchandiser (Sourcing & Production) for our Kolkata office.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will be the bridge between our design concepts and the final physical product - responsible for putting the right fabric at the right price into the right pair of hands, on time. This is a hands-on, field-facing role, not a coordination desk job.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

- Raw material sourcing - Independently identify and source fabrics (cottons, linens, knits and blends) and trims against seasonal moods and our category needs. Own the fabric shortlist, not just the follow-up.
- Vendor and job worker management - Build, expand and hold to account a reliable network of job workers and stitching units. Allocate orders on the basis of capacity, skill and past quality record.
- Costing and negotiation - Prepare the Bill of Materials (BOM) yourself and negotiate directly with fabric mills, printers and job workers. You will be measured on landed cost per garment, not on effort.
- Production tracking - Own the Time & Action (TNA) calendar end to end so samples and bulk land in time for weekly drops. Escalate slippage early, with a recovery plan attached.
- Quality governance - Visit job work units regularly, read the line, and resolve construction and technical issues on the floor. Handle rejections and reworks to conclusion.
- Documentation - Keep sourcing, costing and inventory trackers current and accurate.

WHAT WE REQUIRE

- 1-3 years of hands-on merchandising experience with an apparel brand, garment export house, or garment manufacturing unit.
- Apparel only. We are not considering candidates whose experience is in home furnishing, home textiles, leather goods, footwear, accessories, or any non-garment sourcing. Your entire working exposure should be to garments.
- Solid command of garment construction and fabric properties - GSM, shrinkage, weaves, handfeel, colour fastness - and of how each behaves through production.
- Robust Microsoft Excel. You should be comfortable building and maintaining your own costing and inventory trackers.
- Strong negotiation skills - able to hold a line with mills and suppliers, and communicate clearly with ground-level job workers in the same day.
- Someone who prefers being in the market and on the shop floor over being at a desk. This role travels locally, often.

NICE TO HAVE

- Women's western wear experience. Tops, dresses, bottoms, knits and wovens - all garment categories count.
- A working knowledge of Kolkata fabric markets and the job worker / stitching unit ecosystem.
- Fashion Technology (B.FTech), Fashion / Apparel Merchandising or Textile Design background. Preferred, not mandatory if the experience is right.
