MERCHANT NAVY — OFFICERS & ENGINEERS

1. DECK OFFICERSChief Officer / Chief Mate

Department: Deck Reports To: Master / Captain

Key Responsibilities

- Assist the Master in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
- Supervise deck operations, cargo operations, mooring and anchoring activities.
- Manage deck crew and allocate duties according to operational requirements.
- Ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM Code and company procedures.
- Conduct safety drills, toolbox meetings and risk assessments.
- Maintain navigational, safety and deck equipment in operational condition.
- Oversee cargo securing, loading, discharge and cargo documentation.
- Maintain deck stores, inventory and maintenance records.
- Support onboard training and development of junior officers and ratings.
- Assume navigational watchkeeping duties as required.

Second Officer / Second Mate

Department: Deck

Reports To: Chief Officer / Master

Key Responsibilities

- Maintain navigational charts, publications and electronic navigation systems.
- Perform bridge watchkeeping and safe navigation of the vessel.
- Assist with passage planning and voyage preparation.
- Maintain navigational equipment and relevant records.
- Support GMDSS and communication-related duties as assigned.
- Participate in emergency drills and safety activities.
- Assist the Chief Officer and Master with deck operations.
- Ensure compliance with company SMS and international maritime regulations.

Third Officer / Third Mate

Department: Deck

Reports To: Chief Officer / Master

Key Responsibilities

- Maintain and inspect lifesaving and firefighting equipment.
- Conduct navigational watchkeeping duties.
- Assist in safety drills, inspections and emergency preparedness.
- Maintain safety equipment records and relevant documentation.
- Assist with deck maintenance and operational activities.
- Participate in cargo, mooring and anchoring operations.
- Follow company SMS, vessel procedures and applicable maritime regulations.

1. MARINE ENGINEERSChief Engineer

Department: Engine Reports To: Master / Technical Superintendent

Key Responsibilities

- Take overall responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the engine department.
- Supervise main propulsion machinery, generators and auxiliary systems.
- Manage planned maintenance and corrective maintenance activities.
- Ensure reliable operation of fuel, lubrication, cooling, electrical and other essential systems.
- Supervise engine-room personnel and allocate duties.




- Maintain machinery records, logs, maintenance documentation and technical reports.
- Ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM Code and company procedures.
- Monitor fuel consumption, machinery performance and technical efficiency.
- Coordinate with the Master, Superintendent and shore-based technical team.
- Lead emergency response and machinery failure procedures.

Second Engineer

Department: Engine

Reports To: Chief Engineer

Key Responsibilities

- Assist the Chief Engineer in managing daily engine-room operations.
- Supervise maintenance and operation of main and auxiliary machinery.
- Coordinate planned maintenance activities and machinery inspections.
- Monitor engine-room personnel and work allocation.
- Ensure machinery is maintained according to company procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
- Maintain engineering records and maintenance documentation.
- Assist with bunkering, fuel management and machinery performance monitoring.
- Participate in emergency preparedness, drills and troubleshooting.
- Support compliance with environmental and safety requirements.

Third Engineer

Department: Engine

Reports To: Second Engineer / Chief Engineer

Key Responsibilities

- Operate and maintain assigned machinery and auxiliary systems.
- Carry out routine inspections, maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Monitor generators, pumps, compressors, boilers and other assigned equipment.
- Maintain accurate engine-room logs and operational records.
- Assist with fuel, lubrication and machinery checks.
- Participate in planned maintenance activities.
- Follow safe working practices and permit-to-work procedures.
- Assist senior engineers during machinery repairs and emergencies.

Fourth Engineer

Department: Engine

Reports To: Second Engineer / Chief Engineer

Key Responsibilities

- Assist in the operation and maintenance of auxiliary machinery.
- Conduct routine machinery inspections and operational checks.
- Maintain assigned pumps, compressors, purifiers and other equipment.
- Record machinery parameters and report abnormalities.




- Assist with planned maintenance and repairs.
- Maintain engine-room cleanliness and good housekeeping standards.
- Follow company safety procedures and environmental requirements.
- Support senior engineers during maintenance and emergency operations.

1. COMMON REQUIREMENTS — OFFICERS & ENGINEERSQualifications & Certification

Candidates should possess:
- Valid Certificate of Competency (CoC), as applicable.
- Valid STCW certification and mandatory training.
- Valid medical fitness certificate.
- Valid passport and seafarer documentation.
- Valid CDC / Seaman's Book, as applicable.
- Relevant tanker, gas, chemical, DP or other vessel-specific certification where required.
- Required flag-state endorsements, where applicable.
- Relevant sea service experience for the rank and vessel type.
