Job Description:

A Patching and Lining technician (Refractory Technician/Mason) in a steel company is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining the heat-resistant linings in high-temperature vessels such as furnaces, ladles, and converters. These roles ensure the integrity of equipment containing molten metal, prevent burn-throughs, and optimize vessel life. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Core Responsibilities and Duties
Refractory Installation (Lining): Installing current refractory bricks, castables, or ceramic fibers in furnaces, ladles, and tundishes.
Repair and Maintenance (Patching): Performing hot and cold gunning repairs to repair worn-out linings, particularly in high-wear zones of BOF converters and ladles.
Delining/Demolition: Safely removing old or damaged refractory linings using mechanical equipment like jackhammers and pneumatic chisels.
Surface Preparation: Cleaning and preparing steel surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of recent lining materials, including sandblasting.
Equipment Operation: Operating machinery such as concrete mixers, gunning machines,



and pneumatic tools.
Monitoring and Inspection: Inspecting lining conditions, monitoring shell temperatures, and detecting hot spots to plan maintenance.
Safety Compliance: Implementing hot work committee guidelines, ensuring PTW (Permit to Work) compliance, and adhering to strict PPE requirements. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Key Skills and Qualifications
Technical Knowledge: Understanding of refractory materials (bricks, monolithic, alumina spinel) and their application techniques.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in gunning, shotcreting, and bricklaying.
Physical Stamina: Ability to work in confined spaces and high-temperature settings.
Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret refractory drawings and installation patterns.
