Job Description: Hotel Manager
Property: Boutique Hotel, 12 rooms with in-house restaurant
Location: Narkanda, Shimla District, Himachal Pradesh, India
Reports to: Owner / Director
Department: Operations
Employment type: Full-time, on-site (residential or staff accommodation can be offered)
Position Summary
The Hotel Manager runs the whole property: rooms, restaurant, housekeeping, front office, maintenance, finances and guest experience. In a small property, the manager is hands-on and leads from the floor. The role needs someone who can deliver warm, personalised hospitality, control costs, and manage the seasonal swings of a hill destination (peak summer tourist season, winter snow and skiing, and the apple season).
Key Responsibilities
1. Overall Operations
- Manage daily operations of the 12-room hotel and restaurant to defined service and quality standards.
- Prepare and follow SOPs for front office, housekeeping, F&B;, maintenance and security.
- Conduct daily briefings, property walk-throughs and room/restaurant inspections.
- Ensure smooth functioning during power cuts, water shortages, snowfall and road closures.
2. Guest Experience and Sales
- Ensure high guest satisfaction and handle complaints and feedback promptly.
- Manage bookings, room inventory, rates and occupancy across direct channels, OTAs (MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, Goibibo, etc.) and travel agents.
- Build local tie-ups for sightseeing, treks, skiing, adventure activities and cab services.
- Manage the hotel's online reputation (Google, TripAdvisor, OTA reviews) and social media with the owner.
3. Restaurant and F&B;
- Oversee restaurant operations, menu planning, pricing and food quality with the chef.
- Control food cost, wastage, stock and purchases; manage local vendor relationships.
- Ensure compliance with FSSAI norms and hygiene standards.
- Plan special menus, events, group meals and seasonal offerings.
4. Financial Management
- Prepare monthly budgets, forecasts and P&L; reports for the owner.
- Control operating costs, manage petty cash and daily cash reconciliation.
- Track revenue, RevPAR, ADR and occupancy, and recommend pricing strategies.
- Ensure correct billing and GST compliance.
5. Team Management
- Recruit, train, schedule and supervise staff (front office, housekeeping, kitchen, service, maintenance, security).
- Manage attendance, performance, discipline and motivation, with a focus on retaining local staff.
- Plan manpower for peak and lean seasons.
6. Compliance, Safety and Maintenance
- Maintain all statutory licences: tourism registration, FSSAI, fire NOC, trade licence, pollution/waste requirements, and police (Form C) guest registration.
- Ensure fire safety, first aid, CCTV and guest security systems are in place and working.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance of rooms, heating systems, geysers, generator and water supply.
- Follow eco-friendly and responsible-tourism practices suited to the Himalayan environment.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or Diploma in Hotel Management (preferred), or graduation with strong relevant experience.
- 5-8 years of experience in hotels, of which at least 2-3 years in a managerial or supervisory role, ideally in a small or boutique property or resort.
- Experience running both rooms and F&B; operations.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong leadership, communication and people management skills.
- Working knowledge of a PMS/booking engine, channel manager, POS, MS Excel and basic accounting.
- Good cost-control, purchasing and vendor negotiation skills.
- Fluent in Hindi and English; knowledge of Pahari/Himachali is a plus.
- Problem-solving attitude and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Comfortable with the remote, cold mountain workplace and flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
Working Conditions
- Based on-site in Narkanda (approx. 2,700 m altitude); cold winters with snowfall.
- Irregular hours, with higher workload during tourist seasons and festivals.
